Hair tutorial: How to create a faux bob

Hope you’re enjoying this week of hair tutorials!

For my next tutorial I’ve found a way to have short hair but without the big chop – a faux bob.

Inspired by NYFW and the the recent hair trend for faux bobs, as seen a Rodarte and Oscar de la Renta (pictured below).

What you need:

  • Hair elastic
  • Comb / Brush
  • Bobby pins
  • Hairspray

How to create a faux bob

Step by step

1 – Section your hair. Take a section from ear to ear and clip the top section away.

2-3 – Braid the bottom section. Plait or braid the bottom section, whichever is easier for you to do.

4 – Pin the plait up. Fold the plait around and pin in place flat against your head.

5 – Tease for volume. Backcomb the top section to create some volume and shape so your hair hides the braid. If you have fine hair you can use some hairspray underneath.

6 – Smooth the top. Comb or brush the top of your hair to smooth it.

7-8 – Make a low ponytail. Use an elastic to secure all your hair into a low ponytail. Make sure the hair on the sides is long enough to cover your ears. Keep this loose as this forms the side of your bob.

9 – Tuck the ponytail underneath. Pin the ponytail in place underneath. Put a bobby pin through the elastic and pin to the braid. This will make it really secure.

10 – You’re done! Maybe add a spritz of hairspray to catch any flyaways and smooth your hair.

This faux bob hairstyle also looks great with curls. If you have layers, work with them to create a more natural looking bob.

This is new style for me as my hair is only just long enough to make this work, but I think it will become a regular favourite.

What a cool tutorial! ;) I sometimes miss my short hair, but then again, there are so many awesome hairdos you can do with longer hair :P .

Hope you’ve started the week off with a huge smile! ;D

Now that style could prevent me from going the chop (as I’m inclined to do every few years!). Gorgeous Christina.

Me too Nikki! Every time I write about short hair I keep thinking about cutting it all off again…

I’ve tried the faux bob and it’s so fun to change up your hair style! I’ve never seen it done by braiding the bottom section though. I’ll have to try it though!

Thanks Toni! The braid underneath is great if you have long hair or thick hair, as it makes it the bob lighter and keeps most of your hair out of the way.

This is such an easy style and really helps keep my hair versatile! It seems like everyone says to keep your hair long when it’s short and cut it short when it’s long so this a great way to take advantage of both looks. :) I’ll definitely be trying this tomorrow.

Thanks Jill! It’s the best of both worlds!

I may have to try this….I’ve always hoped to find a way of making my very long hair short for the day! My hair is all the way down my back, but hopefully I can make it work. We’ll see how it goes!

that looks hard, besides i don’t get the instruction, is that a french braid you did on the back?? or just a braid??

Hi Ash, I did a French braid, but you can just do a braid and pin it up in the same way. It depends how long and/or thick your hair is as to what sits better. Its actually quite an easy style and I wore this again on the weekend with curly hair.

thanks! I just tried and I kind of did it haha, I need to work on my tecnique but it was a good 1st try ;) I have almost waist length hair so it’s more of a challenge but since I’ve been flirting with the idea of chopping it off this will satisfy me for awhile at least :D

Wow, your hair is so long! Thanks for trying this style. I wonder if you also braided the ponytail you tuck under, that might help hold more hair up?

I LOVE your hairstyle tutorials! but with my curls i can’t brush them when my hairs dry or i end up with a pouffy ball of fuzz, does yours do the same? and will these hairstyles work without brushing?
also can you put a pic up of the bob with curls?
thanks xxx

Thanks Teejay! My curls do the same thing. I normally blow dry my hair straight for these tutorials. I use a round brush to smooth out my hair from wet. If I brush out my dry curls they go crazy. I’ll definitely post this with curls, great idea.
