Styling tips for short hair

Hi!  I’m Cheri and I blog over at I Am Momma Hear Me Roar.  It’s a DIY blog mostly about home decor and sewing, but I do a “hair week” once a year and Christina is always really kind to guest post for me then.  For this year’s hair week I decided to chop off all my hair.

I went from this….

….to this.

I had really short hair one other time in my life, but I didn’t love it them.  This time around was different.  Here are a few things I did right the second time around.

These are my current short hair tips.

1) Find great products to use.

This has made a huge difference this time around.  I didn’t know what to use on my hair the first time.  Here are my two favorite products I’ve been using.  I use “Power Dressing” by Pureology and I apply a little to my hair when it’s wet.  I blow dry my hair and then sprinkle in “Volumizing Powder” by Beyond the Zone at the roots.  Big Sexy Hair makes the powder as well, but this brand is 1/3 the price and works just as well.  I spend more money on products now that my hair is short, but I use so little of them that I know they’ll last forever.

2) Have fun with color.

I feel like short hair is bolder and even empowering.  It’s easy to add a little color and the way I did it this time makes the upkeep really simple.  My stylist put in a few foils diagonally on top and then one larger chuck on the other side.  (I drew in on the picture where the red was added.)  Because it’s underneath, you never really see the roots and I don’t have to keep it up as much.  I recolor the red myself as it fades, but I don’t have to strip and color the roots often.  In fact it’s been a couple of months now and I haven’t redone the roots at all.

I can also part my hair on the opposite side if I want to show more of the red.  It gives me a little freedom to make my hair more conservative or more bold.

3) Own it.

With shorter hair I like to wear a little more makeup then I did before.  I also enjoy dressing a little more artsy and funky.  Because my hair takes so little time to do, I have more time to spend on makeup and dressing which has been really fun.  I also feel “ready” each day because I’m not throwing my hair in a ponytail and running out the door.  I love short hair.  Here are a few fun styles that make a statement.

So, are any of you rocking the short hair?  Do you love it?  Do you find it empowering?  I’d love to hear your take on it.

Thanks for having me!  – Cheri

I had my hair as short as yours for about 4 years (2006-2010). In 2010, We had a huge move and in doing so, moved away from my best friend/hairdresser. I went on strike and didn’t cut my hair. I just didn’t trust anyone but her doing “my” haircut. I’ve only had it trimmed once since then (I know- so bad!) so needless to say, it’s getting very long- to my shoulders now. I am getting the urge to cut it again. Your pictures are totally making me want to go do it NOW! ahahaha I go back and forth , but eventually I see myself going short. I just need to find the perfect new hairdresser 😉

Yay for short cut Saturday! and thanks so much to Cheri for posting, I can’t believe you chopped off all that beautiful wavy hair but I must say that your short cut looks absolutely gorgeous! I wish I had the guts to go that short.

Collen, I think you can totally do straight hair without a perm. If it’s body you are looking for, I really think that’s all about the products you use. My hair isn’t actually that curly. It’s curled in the picture above, but it’s naturally more straight than that.

      I hope that helps!

I cut my hair into a pixie cut this summer and I feel like it’s given me a new lease on life. Like you, I love wearing make up now and love feeling “ready” to go out even if I only have 5 minutes in the morning. I feel like it’s given me a whole new lease on life – I feel like I’m slowly redoing my whole wardrobe to go with my haircut! (Luckily for me I also had a baby 8 months ago and none of my old clothes fit right anyway, so I have an excuse. :D) I’ve also really enjoyed rocking cute headbands, like you are in your picture! They are so fun, if I can keep my 4-year-old daughter from stealing them for herself. 😀

Thanks to Christine’s encouragement, I cut my always long hair into a pixie this spring and LOVE it. As a mother to two small children and having recently lost a bunch of weight, the short look suits my newly emerged facial features and makes me look put together instead of “mommish.” I’m having tons of fun playing with slightly different lengths and shapes because it’s ready for another trim every 3 weeks. And yes, it has definitely changed the amount and frequency of makeup, as well as accessory and clothing choices. I know I’ll grow it back out again at some point, but right now, I don’t even want to think about it!

I just cut 18+ inches off my hair and now it is an adorable pixie cut. I was actually inspired in part by you cutting your hair! I’ve had it short before many years ago and liked it but I’m not as thin now now and I was worried it wouldn’t look good. WRONG! If anything I look lighter/thinner than with my long hair. I have twin toddlers so I was only doing my long hair maybe once a month and I just felt like I looked so bleh all the time with it up in a pony tail. I love my short hair because with some minimal effort I feel like I look sophisticated, plus as you said there is more time for makeup and such which helps. I’m still surprised when I walk by a mirror in our home and I see how good I look first thing in the morning. Aveda has some great styling videos on youtube that helped me achieve more of the look I was going for. Here’s to short hair!

I had breast cancer earlier this year, and so my hair is still growing in. I’ve never had short hair before, and I can’t do very much with it yet as it is so incredibly short! But I’m inspired by your hair-daring! As soon as mine is long enough, I’m going to add color and experiment with it a bit. :-) Thank you for your post!

I love your hair!! I cut all mine off into a faux hawk 5 years ago and I don’t know that i’ll ever want to grow it back! I have 2 young kids now and it helps me to feel so much more ready quicker and helps me not to feel so much like a frumpy mom on days where I really do feel like I am!

Good idea on playing with color though! I think i’ll look into sticking a little color in my hair!

I’ve had a pixie style cut for a little over a year. (My hairdresser changes it slightly with each cut, but the most recent one is really working for me.) I wear headbands, some simple and some more fun, and I started wearing mascara daily whereas before I very rarely wore any makeup. It makes me feel more fun, confident, and girly, and I can’t imagine wanting to go back to a longer style (although even before that, my hair wasn’t nearly as long as yours pre-this cut).

I’ve also never really colored my hair (in my early 30s and haven’t had much of a need for grey coverage in my brown hair yet), but I like the idea of the red highlights you have. Maybe something for the future. :)

    Thanks for your post.

After more than 10 years with my hair always just long enough for a pony tail only because my husband wanted it and I hated it, he went away and few days later my hair got cut.
I really was afraid what my coworkers would say but nearly everyone likes my new look. They say my hair looks as cheek as I am. :)

    I LOVE short hair.
I can have lunch outside on a windy day without hair in the soup. 😉
I need just 5 Minutes to wash and dry my hair in the morning.
I can open all windows of my car and no hair is trying to make me blind.
I feel free and for the first time I feel like being myself.
