How to tell if a celebrity hairstyle will suit you

Most of us find new hairstyle inspiration from celebrity pictures or magazines, but how can you tell if that style will suit you?

First things first, try the thumb trick.

Whose hair book

The Thumb Trick

Put your thumb (or fingertip) over the celebrity’s face and really take a look at the hairstyle.

Do you really like the hairstyle, or do you like the celebrity?

By removing the face you can see the style for what it is, and decide if you actually like the hair.

Do some google research

If you still love the hairstyle, google the celebrity for more photos, especially from different angles.

Also look for images of their hair in other haircuts to see how it compares to your hair.

Consult with your hairdresser

Once you have a few images of the style, and you know what it is that you like about it, make an appointment for a consultation with your hairdresser.

Here are my tips for how to explain what you want at the hairdresser and listen to what they have to say about the style.

A good stylist can customise the style to suit your hair. They should also be honest and say when it’s just never going to work for you.

Remember that most celebrity red carpet hairstyles take hours to achieve, even if it looks relaxed and undone. Do you have the same amount of time to spend on your hair?

Have you ever been inspired to change your hair because of a celebrity hairstyle? How did it look in your hair?

I have awful hair. Truly awful. It’s baby-fine, thin and limp. I don’t have very high expectations of hairdressers, because I can’t expect them to create miracles with my awful hair. My most successful haircut was when I brought my hairdresser some photos of Carey Mulligan, and asked her if she could do something like that, all choppy and as un-limp as possible, with different highlights running through it.

Carey Mulligan is a great hair idol for you Zunni. Also check pics of Diane Kruger. She has super fine hair and rarely wears extensions. Don’t hate your hair, it’s so quick and easy to wash and restyle. Plus make friends with dry shampoo (even in clean hair) for a little extra body and volume x

I’ve been applying dry shampoo ever since I read your review – it’s a real game-changer! Thank you.

I would always advise consulting with your hair stylist. I personally wanted my hair to look exactly like Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, but soon found out that my hair wasn’t short and fine enough for that style. Rather than fixating on one picture, get an educated opinion as a starting point!

I’ve been trying to style my ends under like a bunch of stars have in the 90′s using a styling iron like stars of the 90′s decade. Like Dr. Chase Meridian from Batman Forever (I know that was a wig, but I love the way the ends go under), or Rene Russo in Tin Cup, Leah Remini in King of Queens. I can’t get it that way everytime. But, with the best of luck and success, the best hair days with my brunette straight hair, I can get it in 15 minutes. Of course, I can everytime never get it that way before I leave the house Most of the time getting it underskew the best I can without taking too much time or effort, I can get it under like Sarah Michelle Gellar/Daphne in the 1st Scooby Doo with the ends slightly under-any suggestions?

Have you tried hot rollers? You can clip the ends of your hair under in the rollers, get ready and take them out just before you leave in the morning. Easy! x
