2 min updo for curly hair

November 24, 2015 By Hair Romance 16 Comments

This quick curly updo is going to be your new curly go-to style.

Hair Romance - quick updo for curly hair

I love wearing my curls out but on day two (and three, and four..) I’ll usually put my hair up. This style is super quick and takes less than two minutes to do so it’s perfect for work or busy mornings.

If you’re going out or to a wedding, you could dress this style up with a gorgeous clip or accessory.

For this curly hair tutorial, you only need to know how to do a basic braid / plait.

Quick Curly Hair Updo Tutorial

What you need:

  • 2 small clear hair elastics (actually I didn’t use any but it does make the style easier)
  • Bobby pins

Step-by-step tutorial:

  1. Separate the top half of your hair for the first braid.
  2. Create a plait (braid) by splitting your top section into three equal sections. Cross the right over the middle, then the left over the right and continue down.
  3. Secure the end of the braid with your elastic. Or if your curly hair is like mine, it will hold just fine without a band.
  4. Plait the bottom section. Repeat the same steps on the bottom section so you have two plaits (braids) in your hair.
  5. Roll the bottom plait into a bun. Curve your plait around to form a bun and pin in place with bobby pins. Don’t forget to tuck the ends in!
  6. Wrap the top plait around the bun. My hair isn’t that long so it just fits around my bun and I’ve tucked the ends under. Pin in place with bobby pins.

Styling tips

  • Use small elastics – the smaller elastics are much easier to hide in the finished style. Or skip them all together like I did!
  • If you have really long curly hair – you’ll end up with a larger, statement bun which would look beautiful!
  • If you have fine curly hair – remember to stretch out your braids before making the bun. This will make your hair seem thicker.

I have naturally curly hair and am in desperate need for some new looks other than messy bun, or down. Wearing it down is such a hassle too. I ALWAYS have my hair in a bun if I’m too lazy to actually do it. These hairstyles are perfect! I’ve tried a couple and the turn outs were amazing. Thank you so much! There’s not a lot of easy styles out there for natural curls!

I love all your styles and have been trying them out on my hair which is very similar to yours, but a little more frizzy sometimes. Do you have any recommendations to combat the frizz, especially on day 2 & 3?!
Thank you so much! Your styles are changing how I feel about my hair… I no longer feel stuck with my mop of blonde curls!!

Hi Nicci! Thank you so much! I follow these tips to wake up with great curls and then I use a water spray to mist my hair and reshape any curls that are a bit squashed. It’s easier to prevent frizz than to treat it. I avoid touching my hair as much as possible. I also do a deep conditioning treatment when I wash my hair. Be careful of leave-in products containing glycerin and other humectants as they can make your hair frizzier in humid weather. There are more styling tips in my new ebook too x

I LOVE this one Christina! This is the first one of your updos I’ve been able to do without needing to straighten the front first. The sides and bottom of my hair get the most messed up in the night, and this one hides the bad curls and shows the good curls perfectly! I’m excited! 🙂 Less work in the morning!

I love it! Would be quite a pain to get the same result with straight hair, but I think it might be worth it. Do you have any great tricks on how to make curls last longer?

I have a similar tutorial in straight hair here – plait bun tutorial – the steps are similar but you get a totally different look 🙂

This is so pretty! And perfect timing since I’ve to look (reasonably) polished at work tomorrow and will be on day 4 curls. Thanks for the inspiration!
