3 ways to use hair oils

May 29, 2015 By Hair Romance 8 Comments

Oils and hair do mix. Here are three ways to use hair oils and serums in your hair care routine for happy hair.

Brought to you by Schwarzkopf

Hair Romance - Hair Happiness Challenge - using serums

It’s already week four of the Schwarzkopf Hair Happiness Challenge and I’m a bit sad that this is the last week. My hair is looking a lot happier though!

So after finding out my hair horoscope I switched products to suit my hair and added in the crucial third step of leave-in conditioner. I took time out with a hair treatment and this last challenge is to use oils and serums to keep my hair looking gorgeous all day long.

For a long time oils were feared because it was mistakenly thought they made your hair oily or lank. But oils are the best for my hair. My thirsty locks can’t get enough of the stuff. Thick, coarse or curly hair is happiest when styled with oils.

If you have fine hair, there are new formulations that are perfect for your hair and won’t weigh your hair down. You can even use them as a pre-shampoo to take extra care of your hair.

Check out these three simple ways to use oils in your hair.

Three ways to use hair oils

Hair Romance - Hair Happiness Challenge - 3 ways to use oils and serums

1. Hair oils as a pre-wash treatment

Before you wash your hair, massage a few pumps of oil through your scalp and hair. It’s a great opportunity to give yourself a head massage and stimulate blood flow to your scalp and hair follicles.

Using hair oils before you shampoo helps to protect your scalp so it’s ideal if you have fine hair, dry hair or a sensitive scalp.

2. Hair oils to treat clean hair

Treat your hair, and help control frizz with a hair oil. Apply your oil or serum to your towel-dried hair after washing. When you hop out of the shower, add in a pump of hair oil to the ends of your hair. Use a wide toothed comb to gently distribute the product throughout your hair.

You can leave your hair to air dry, or add a heat protectant before blowdrying your hair.

3. Hair oils for hair styling

Smooth your finished look and add shine with an oil. Once your hair is dry, you can use a pump of hair oil to finish styling your hair. They can tame any fine flyaways and give your style that final polish.

I like to rub the oil between my palms first and then run my hands over the ends of my hair. Then, with only a tiny amount of product left on my hands, I smooth over the top of my hair to grab any fine hairs and keep them in place.

For Sizzle Sisters like me (my hair horoscope sign), our hair loves extra moisture. I like the Schwarzkopf Extra Care 6 Miracles Oil Essence when I hop out of the shower and a touch of the Schwarzkopf Extra Care Moisture Gloss crystal oil treatment once I’ve finished styling my hair.

Are you a fan of hair oils? What’s your favourite way to use them in your hair care routine?

This is the last week of the challenge of the Hair Happiness Challenge. Don’t forget to log your progress to be in the running for awesome prizes!

I’m using castor oil once every week and it’s working for me.

almost all these oils contain Sulicones (Dimeticone) which on the long dry out hair and cover it with a coat. Nuxe huile prodigeuse doe not, however.

I LOVE hair oil. Right now I’m really into Nuxe’s Huile Prodigieuse. It’s light on my fine, curly hair and the smell is great. I also like Moroccan Oil for when I need more moisture.

Huile Prodigieuse works well for my fine, wavy (S-wavy) hair, too.

I also like the OGX ones, usually as a pre-shampoo treatment as some have a heavier texture.

I can’t believe the Hair Happiness challenge is nearly over – I’m sad too! I’ve seriously learnt so much about my hair and the extra things I can do to take better care of it. I never knew you could use an oil before washing your hair – what a fantastic idea! It’s been so fun doing this challenge with you. x
