A new solution to tame frizz (that even works for curls)

August 21, 2014 By Hair Romance 63 Comments

Frizz. I battle it daily but until now there hasn’t been a treatment to tame the frizz without straightening your hair.

Brought to you by Kerastase

Hair Romance - Kerastase Discipline treatment review - Keratin smoothing for curly hair

Frizz is one of my biggest hair issues. I also know it’s one of your biggest hair struggles. The only ways to fix frizz, so far, have been through chemical treatments or blowdrying and styling. But I’ve discovered a new solution.

Blowdrying and styling is time consuming and can take a toll on your hair. Plus it’s totally dependent on the weather. So many times I’ve styled my hair only to face rain or humidity, and feel like I’ve completely wasted my time.

Chemical treatments are something I’ve steered clear of in the past. They are an effective solution for frizz but they also mean permanently straightening your hair. Many treatments can leave your hair flat and stiff.

Another risk is that some keratin treatments can change the colour of your hair. They can lighten coloured hair and even change the tone of grey hair, turning it yellow.

So when Kerastase asked me to trial their new Discipline smoothing in-salon treatment I was very interested. I love Kerastase treatments. I personally rate their in-salon treatments very highly and when I’m travelling I look for Kerastase salons as a sign of quality.

But I had a few questions first…

Will it change my curls?
Will it change my hair colour?
How does it work?

Hair Romance - Kerastase Discipline treatment and products review

Here’s what they had to say:

Will it change my curls?

No. Discipline is not a straightening treatment. It tames frizz and smooths your hair but does not alter your natural hair structure.

Will it change my hair colour?

No. There is no change to hair colour. Discipline nourishes and treats your hair, and adds shine.

How does it work?

Discipline works on two levels 1) to tame and smooth hair and 2) to restore and strengthen. Kerastase have developed Morpho-Keratin complex that restores hair by replenishing hair fibres with amino acids, wheat proteins and ceramides.

As well as strengthening the hair from the inside, Discipline uses polymers to smooth the surface of the hair and create an anti-humidity surface.

My hair – before

Hair Romance - Before - Kerastase Discipline treatment review

Yeah, I like to really test these treatments. This is my hair washed and conditioned and roughly blowdried. I used my normal shampoo and conditioner but didn’t use any additional styling products.

The in-salon treatment

My hair is washed with the Bain Fluidealiste. This range has two shampoos, one of which is the first sulfate-free shampoo for Kerastase.

Back in the chair, the Discipline treatment is applied to my towel-dried hair and combed through. The first difference I notice is the smell (which is divine) and that my stylist Shannen isn’t wearing gloves. She says that the treatment is so gentle she swears her hands feel better working it through my hair.

My hair is roughly blowdried and then straightened twice to activate the Morpho-Keratin Complex. Unlike traditional keratin treatments that need 210 degrees+ temperatures, Discipline is activated at 180 degrees so it’s gentler on your hair.

My hair is then washed and conditioned at the basin (plus an epic head massage!). I think that this is the best part of the treatment.

Finally my hair is blowdried and I’m ready to go. Hair drying time can be shortened by up to half after the Discipline treatment too. Over all, the whole treatment took just under 1.5 hours – and I have a lot of hair. Normally treatments take anywhere from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.

My hair – after

Hair Romance - After - Kerastase Discipline treatment review

I don’t know… can you see a difference? 😉

Discipline treatment – Before and after comparison

Hair Romance - Before and after - Kerastase Discipline treatment review

The Discipline in-salon service is a game changer. There is nothing else on the market that can give me these results without damaging my curls.

My hair feels so soft and it’s definitely smoother. The effects lasts up to 10 washes and you can even stretch it a little further by using the shampoo, conditioner and leave-in spray.

The real test – at home styling

Hair Romance - Kerastase Discipline products review

I washed and conditioned my hair with Bain Fluidealiste Sulfate Free ($42) and Maskertine ($60). There’s also a lighter conditioner (Fondant Fluidealiste $48) for fine hair.

Like all Kerastase products, you don’t need to use much product as they are so concentrated. Just a 10c size amount washes all of my hair. The shampoo has a small lather. As with other sulphate-free products, rather than using more product, add more water to create a lather. It rinses out easily and leaves my hair feeling super clean.

The Maskertine smells divine and is so nourishing on my hair. Remember to gently squeeze out any excess water from your hair before applying conditioner so that you don’t waste any product.

The Discipline Fluidissime ($46) is a leave-in spray that I applied on damp hair as a heat protectant and on dry hair to finish the style. It also has the same gorgeous fragrance and really smooths my hair.

Hair Romance - Kerastase Discipline treatment review - first wash

This is my hair roughly blowdried following the Disclipline treatment. I used a round brush to smooth the top layers but spent about half the time I normally would styling my hair.

I love how soft my hair feels, but isn’t flat or limp. It still holds it’s shape and I can’t stop touching my hair.

The real test – my curls

Hair Romance - After - Kerastase Discipline treatment review in curly hair

Like my hair but better. I love how much easier my hair is to style, and that I haven’t lost any of my curl. Success.

Summary

If permanent straightening treatments aren’t for you, then this is a new solution that is very different to other products on the market.

The Kerastase Discipline treatment is great for:

  • Frizzy, unruly hair that has been coloured
  • Fine frizzy hair
  • Curly hair
  • Men’s hair

Discipline is an easy solution for holidays or special occasions. It’s also a fantastic regular frizz treatment option if you have curly or wavy hair, or your hair is too fine or damaged for traditional keratin treatments.

What the Kerastase Discipline treatment won’t do:

  • Give you straight hair, like chemical treatments do.
  • Stop you blowdrying your hair, though it does make it quicker.

Kerastase Discipline is an in-salon treatment that takes 45 mins – 1.5 hours and costs approximately $120. It lasts for up to 10 washes but using the companion products can extend the finish.

To find your nearest Kerastase Paris salon visit Kerastase.com.au or phone 1300 365 552.

Hi. I have really frizzy, dry & highly porous hair. For a long time I’ve been trying explain everyone that I want to get rid of my frizz, not my curls but no one ever got it. There are a lot of treatments that tame frizz along with straightening your hair but I couldn’t find any treatment that would let me have my curls until I read your blog. I’ll definitely try it out once. Thanks a lot!

    Hi,

Great review! I have also undergone the treatment a month back and just loved the results. I have long curly hairs which were severely damaged due to bleaching while colouring by the stylist. i am using the home care keratase discipline regime after the treatment and have fallen in love with the products.Hairs have become softer, shinier, weigh less, so manageable and smells like heaven.highly recommended to curly unruly , damaged or unmanageable hair.

Hi! I’m hoping you can offer me some advice!
My hair is AWFUL!!! I can only do two things with it: use a lot of mousse so I can leave it dry naturally (goes very curly but lacks definition), or blow dry with a large round brush, then straighten. I prefer it straight because it looks neater but I have chronic fatigue syndrome and I can’t always find enough energy to spend an hour drying and straightening it.

In an ideal world, I’d be able to use my curling wand to make nice, defined curls, but I can only make it looks nice by curling it if I dry it first. Otherwise it looks frizzy and matte and lacklustre. But clearly using GHD straighteners AND a curling wand is pretty bad for it!!! Is there anything at all I can do so I can JUST use the wand?!? SO frustrated!

Hi Vikki, when I want to curl my hair I often pull it back into a low bun when it’s wet to let it dry. This smooths the top and then I can just curl the bottom. It’s not 100% perfect but it gives the curls/waves a more natural look. Then I use a brush or my hand sprayed with hairspray to smooth any flyaways. Hope this help and works for you too x

My hair and the health of my hair has always been something I have struggled with. There was a period of time I wouldn’t do my hair at all… it was always uncontrollably frizzy and would shed.. it felt like a broom! I tried many hair treatments and went to many salons to try and get my hair healthy again. I started this Shielo line with the Shielo Smoothing Conditioner and fell in love!!! My hair is like new! Healthy shiny and strong! and can use hot tools now and style it, or just leave my hair natural.

You suggested in your initial review that Kerastase Discipline doesn’t make grey hair yellow. This yellowing has been my problem with most smoothing treatments, which is very depressing. Is this true? Is it a matter of there being no citric acid in the product?

    Hi
Is the Discipline In-Salon treatment similar to what is referred to as “Hair Botox” ? I have thin, moderately straight, flaccid hair which is highlighted and do roots every 2 weeks (tons of Gray). I have done Keratin which helps a lot with texture, frizz and shine but I hate how flat it makes my hair . As of late, I only do Keratin (with flat iron sealing) on top crown section as this is where I have a lot of broken hair because of blow drying and constant root touch up. On the rest of my hair, I run Keratin through and blow dry without flat iron… This has given me better results but not ideal… Still too flat & straight but can’t deny it looks much healthier . I am doing research because I have appointment tomorrow to do Hair botox as I’ve heard it’s a better treatment for straight, mature and damaged hair. Is this what Discipline treatment is or is it even less strong than “botox”? If not Botox, Does Kerstase have an In salon “hair Botox” treatment? Which would you recommend for flat, colored, mature hair without losing body and ability to curl (with hit curlers or iron ocassinally)?

Hi Jeannette, I don’t know much about Hair Botox so can’t compare it to Kerastase. I would recommend the Discipline treatment for coloured, damaged hair. I didn’t find it flattened my hair at all and my curl was great. Good luck with your treatment!

Hi! Love the article, just wondering … after a year, how has your hair held up. I have not seen a followup post… did your curls stay in tact? And are you still receiving the treatments? I have done Keratin in the past and they either
a-dont work for me at all, like the same or b-they are almost like a texturizer changing my hair so my curls are more like waves …

Hi Olgie, I forgot to post a follow up! My curls never changed and I still use the Fluidissisme spray which I love. I haven’t been back for more treatments though I would go again. It’s just been a matter of time and other hair product trials that have meant I can’t get into the salon. I’d still recommend for a frizz treatment as it doesn’t straighten your hair 🙂

I go to a Kerastase salon. I had a keratin treatment a week ago. Not the a Kerastase one but another brand. I have very curly 3C hair that is very dryAt the ends from being highlighted two years ago. I did not like the keratin treatment. Having to be infused with a flat iron at 450 degrees has caused more damage to my hair. Split ends are horrible and I had her cut two inches off today. I bought one of the other Kerastase spray in treatments to take home but I’m afraid my hair just can’t handle all that protein. I’ll never do it again. Love my stylist but but I learned a lesson here. I hope I don’t have to cut half my hair off from the damage. It also relaxed my curls by about a third. My hair does feel softer but that’s where the keratin treatment stops for me. Big disappointment after spending over $300.00

I have thick, frizzy, wavy/semi curly red hair. I’m always trying the newest products or suggestions from my stylist. I’m not loyal to many brands. However, for once I could tell a noticeable difference in the texture of my hair after I started using the Shielo Hydrate Conditioner. My hair feels much softer and smoother. I’m not happy about the price, but so far I’ve decided Shielo is worth it. Love it!

Please can you advise me what to buy? would like to do thetreatment at home? Thank you

Hi Yesi, the treatment is only available in-salon. The shampoo and conditioner (masque) are what you use at home and they have a similar anti-frizz effect but it is not as strong as the in-salon treatment. I would recommend finding a salon to try the treatment and buy the shampoo and masque to use at home to prolong the anti-frizz effects x

Do you think it would be OK for me to use the products at home, on their own, without having first received the in-salon treatment? I have all the products you have in your pictures above, but would really like to start off by using the hair masque first because my hair was damaged about 5 months ago (at a salon) and hasn’t really been the same since.
Please let me know, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I just found this website today. I absolutely love it. It is fun to read, your pictures and tutorials look pretty easy. When I try some of your styles, you can be sure I will let you know just how easy they were to accomplish for me personally . I have the same hair as you so I relate to every thing you talk about when it comes to unruly hair. I used to hate mine to. While I am pleased with my stylist now I wish she were more experienced in cutting curly hair. Anyway , I can not get enough of your website!!!! I look forward to tomorrow when I have more time to go through it some more. Can’t wait ! !!! I do have a couple of questions though. First, how do you do all of these styles if you have layers beginning at the crown and all the way down your hair? And secondly, do you have a tutorial on how to properly use a diffuser ? Thank you Sooooooooooo much for all of your hard work and the effort put forth for us girls who don’t know how to style their hair

    Hi,

I love your posts, in particular, this one about Kerastasse Discipline. My hair is curly, unruly and dry.
I use Oleo Relax shampoo and masque and then I style my curls with mousse. My shampoo and mask will be finished soon and I wonder whether I should buy Discipline products. I had read a post about Discipline shampoo available in the Kerastasse USA website that says that the shampoo made the hair too dry. The masque in contrast seems to give one the expected results. I need an advice from you… should I buy the Discipline shampoo, the masque or both? Should I combine with the Oleo relax products?

    Thank you for the advice.

Hi Kelly, that’s a great question. I’d probably switch to the Discipline for a while and see how you go. Make sure you get the suphate free shampoo (there are two in the range). The masque is quite heavy so if you have fine hair you may want to stick with the Oleo relax. It’s fine to combine Discipline with the Oleo products if you prefer them. Both ranges are also great.

I cut my hair short (Yasmine Sewell short), and I love I do have alot of hair and sometimes wonder about doing keratin. I did it twice and hated it (smell, texture, everything). Reading your post has made me think if I would do this, but I have been looking at kerastase website and the in salon treatment does not appear. It can only be bought at salons? But I’m a little confused here. You mentioned that it’s an in-salon treatment only? What does it mean by ‘take-home range’? Does it mean those can be done on our own and not at the salon?

Thanks Louise! There’s two levels of this product – the in-salon treatment is only available for professional salons and is a stronger formula. The take-home products are a similar formula. The take home range helps you maintain and extend the salon treatment, but can also be used on their own. I really like the products whether you get the salon treatment or not 🙂

Hi Jasmine, Bhave have a couple of treatments and Discipline is different but would sit between the Bhave Rescue and Smoothe. Rescue is a great treatment for damaged hair and Smoothe is a great smoothing treatment. The Smoothe though has a stronger straightening element to it so it will flatten curls but it does last longer (3 months I think). Discipline doesn’t last as long, but it also works with your hair texture rather than altering it. Discipline is also quicker to apply. It depends on what you want your hair to look like afterwards and your hair type as to what treatment would best suit you x

Is it possible to do the treatment at home? And what do you need for it? Because they don’t have the salon here where I live :-/

Sorry Saga, this is an in-salon treatment only but I would recommend buying the shampoo, conditioner and leave-in spray. They also contain the Morpho-Keratin complex and can provide a 72 hour humidity barrier on your hair x

Wow, I love the sound of this as my curly hair tends to become so dry and frizzy. The result looks and sounds just awesome.

Thanks Christie, I love how it smooths the frizz but not my curls. Sounds like it would be great for your hair x

How long have you had it in, Christina? I’d love to see how it looks towards the end of the treatment, too.

Hi Sneha, it’s been about 6 washes so far and still looking good. I only wash my hair around twice a week and I didn’t want to wait too long to post about this. I’ll definitely do an update and post more pics in a couple of weeks 🙂

Wow Christina, this is such a major difference. The Kerastace Dicipline treatment has gone straight to my wish list. Divine! The French really know what they’re doing X

That they do Ingrid! I’ve been so scared of smoothing treatments in the past but this one is amazing x

Has anyone had the Discipline treatment done in a NYC salon? If so, where do you recommend?
