Back to school hairstyles – The braided bubble ponytail tutorial

February 3, 2015 By Hair Romance 11 Comments

Hair Romance - School hair - braided bubble ponytail tutorial

Here’s another fun and easy back-to-school hairstyle tutorial – the braided bubble ponytail.

I love this type of ponytail. It’s a perfect style for school days as it is super secure and won’t fall out. You can run around and play all day and your hair will look the same.

I’ve got my gorgeous niece helping me again to show you how to recreate this look. It’s easy enough to do in your own hair too.

For something a little different, I’ve added in a feature braid. The braid is part of the first section and it runs through the other bubbles to create that extra detail.

Although I’m calling this a school hairstyle, this look isn’t just for girls. The bubble ponytail has been a celeb red carpet favourite lately with Olivia Wilde and Blake Lively sporting this style.

The bubble ponytail is more dramatic in long hair, but is still possible to do in shorter hair as well. Anything from shoulder length can give this try.

What you need:

  • 4-6 hair elastics, depending on the length of your hair

Step-by-Step:

  1. Pull back the first section of hair from around your temples and secure with an elastic.
  2. Create your feature braid. Take a small piece of hair from the first section and do a basic braid.
  3. Pull back the second section, approx from above your ears and secure it with an elastic at the back of your head. Make sure to include the first section and braid in with the second section.
  4. Repeat down the back of your head, adding in more sections and securing with a hair elastic.
  5. Continue down your ponytail, placing a hair elastic around your ponytail evenly spaced.
  6. S-T-R-E-T-C-H out your bubbles! To really emphasise each section, pull them gently out and to the sides to create a 3D bubble effect.

Styling tips

  • Use a hair elastic to match your hair colour for a more sophisticated look or go for something glittery or bright to make this style stand out.
  • Take in equal sections at the back of your head to keep the bubbles evenly sized. Match the spacing in the top section to the elastics in your ponytail.
  • You can wear this ponytail quite smooth and flat, or really stretch each section out to create a mohawk effect.

It’s super quick and easy to do this style in your own hair too. I hope you like it and that you give it a go in your hair.

What was your favourite hairstyle to wear to school?

I love this hair style for my sister. I was the one who always braids her hair coz she has a long hair and didn’t even know how to have a tidy look when she’s in school. It is great coz it has a fashionable look even if it seems like a simple one ^_^ Thank you for the tips and the pictures 🙂 This new hair style gave me new idea and my sister will experience a new look now 😀 Actually I already tried the one with the series of ponies but didn’t try to make it bubble-like 🙂

LOVE this! I do something similar with my daughter’s hair – it’s a great way to keep those long curly locks off the back of her neck in the height of Summer – but I hadn’t thought to run a plait through it too. Thanks for the tip x
