Big Hair Idol: Veronica Lake

March 9, 2012 By Hair Romance 13 Comments

Veronica Lake is one of my hair idols.

Her iconic peek-a-boo hairstyle has been imitated and recreated every season, and those classic waves are always a red carpet favourite. The petite movie starlet (she was only 1.51m tall) created a larger than life image still inspires Hollywood today.

For me, she has the perfect waves.

Here in this shot, Veronica demonstrates the perils of working with your hair out. Remember, stay safe in the workplace! A public safety notice from World War II.

You can find my my tutorial for perfect waves here.

Happy Friday and happy weekend lovelies!

Mr Hair Romance has surprised me with a weekend away as it was our third wedding anniversary yesterday. I tweeted a photo from our wedding day as it poured with rain just like it did in Sydney yesterday. Except ours was in reverse, it was fine all day until around 4pm when the clouds rolled in from the south. A huge storm spread over Sydney and it bucketed down until around 10pm when the stars came out. I have to add it didn’t rain for two weeks before our wedding or two weeks after. They say rain is lucky? We’re still together so it’s working so far!

Have  a happy weekend xxx

Straight hair is tough, I guess. I mean, I haven’t seen a lot of examples where straight hair looks romantic. I guess elegant styles go well with straight hair but romantic? Probably not. Rethink your choice of products, maybe that’s the key.

I really love those waves! I so do!
But every time I see women with naturally curly hair it makes me kinda sad. You know, I am engaged to a German guy (the very best!) and we will marry in autumn, but I feel desperate already when I think about how to do my wedding hair. As I have asian ancestors my hair is naturally straight and I mean *really* straight. I have tried everything to get curls that last longer than a couple of minutes. And I had some moderate success – curls that stayed but that looked so artificial on me and felt gross… My financé is ok with my normal hair but when I think of weddings and when I look at photos of his family I just notice all those women having great soft curls (hair down). And yes, it is just so romantic! And it has been kind of like a tradition in his family that most women who got married had their hair down in curls. But somehow I feel that Iít just wouldn’t be me if I would try to copy that and I so do not want to worry about my hair on my wedding day. As a compromise I think about wearing my hair down as well (all straight, but to the middle of my back), but I am afraid that it just won’t look romantic, just boring… Is it only me, but I think there are just too few a pictures that show women with straight hair down for their wedding day and it is really depressing… Ok, I guess I am rambling, but I just really envy you and your hair (and a lot of other europeans probably). So for anyone reading who has curly hair – so many Asians would love that! Be grateful for it! But apart from that… I would really like to know your opinion. Would you still try to curl your hair (if you were me) and go with the not-so-nice-feeling (for the tradition!) or leave it straight or something in between?

I know how you feel Nana, the grass is always greener trust me. If I were you I would wear my hair straight, or in an upstyle. Weddings are usually long days, and it’s hard to keep your hair in a style that fights your natural hair. I wore my hair up, as I knew if would be crazy by the end of the night if it was out. I think I hould post about brides with straight hair, to show you there are lots of beautiful examples where straight hair looks romantic on your wedding day. Plus, think of all the time you’ll save trying to curl it!

Rain on your wedding day means the ancestors are watching over you. 🙂

I love vintage hairstyles. I love hair dressing in general. Veronica Lake’s look is so translatable to today.
