Welcome to a week celebrating curly hair!

Now you know why your hair is curly but what if your hair changes?
That’s exactly what happened to my hair.
For years I had long, straight hair. Maybe it was a little wavy, but never frizzy. Then one day it started to change.
All of a sudden I had curly hair.
And I had no idea how to style it.
It took a long journey of trial and error to work out how to style my curls. I slowly fell in love with my curls and they are the reason I started Hair Romance.
Now I know from your comments and questions that I’m not alone in this hair change and I have found some reasons why this happens.

Why did my hair change from straight to curly?
There are several theories as to why hair changes texture.
Hormones, stress and ageing as seen as the common causes for changes to your hair texture and quality.
You’d think, with the size of the hair industry, there would be a conclusive answer to this question, but research is still underway and there are no decisive results.
One interesting fact about curly hair is that the gene for straight hair is recessive but that the curly hair gene is not completely dominant. That means you could have the curly hair gene but until it’s activated, your waves and curls will be dormant too.
The most likely theory, in my opinion, is to do with your hormones. Hormones are a possible trigger for the curly hair gene.
As well as affecting the quality of your hair, hormones can change your muscle tone too. This includes your scalp. The change of muscle tone could affect the shape of your hair follicles and their direction of growth. Straight hair follicles grow straight out but curly hair follicles have a hook shape.
With my hair, puberty was the when my curls decided to appear and this fits with the hormone changes. For many women, pregnancy and birth have a significant impact on their hair too.
So if you’ve noticed significant changes to your hair texture, check your hormone levels and talk to your doctor and hairdresser about it.
How to cope with the change to your hair

I am 43. My hair was stick straight my entire life and it has slowly changed to wavy and curly ovee the past 2 years, but a lot in the past few months. I love it, i finally have some body and style. I look like I’ve been at the beach without styling. My mom didnt even realize i hadnt styled it! I believe it was caused by hormones.
It looks like a lot of the people posting comments are teenagers. Well, I’m 40. My hair has always been pretty straight. It had a very slight wave in the back, but nothing pulling a straightener through really quickly didn’t fix in a few seconds. That slight wave has now turned into tight spiral curls and it’s driving me nuts because all I can do with it is throw it in a bun now, unless I want to spend almost 2 hours straightening it. It’s still straight in the front. I’ve never seen anybody with hair like mine so I have absolutely no idea how to style it. I’m ready to shave it and buy a wig.
How about getting the straight part permed to match the curly part?
I’ve had 41 years of lovely straight hair until recently it literally went curly overnight. I have been struggling this past 18 with a major surgery that went wrong. Ive been having procedures to fix my surgery on and off since. I thought the change in my hair might have been down to the trauma? I have a concraceptive inject every few months for the past 12+ years so have no idea if this could be hormone related? All I know is that I hate my new hair. I can’t style it and I don’t think it suits me.
hi! i stumbled across this article, because my hair is doing the same thing but a little different situation. im 17. i had pretty severe alopecia for a while recently, leaving me with huge bald patches of bare scalp. but as my hair grew back during treatment the hair is COMPLETELY curly. like tight ringlets. ive had straight hair my whole life and most of it still is straight, but now the grown bald patches of hair stick out because theyre curly. ?
I had pin straight silky hair until i turned about 14 around the same time i started getting my period. Over the years it has shifted to frizzy and spiral curls in the insides of my hair and wavy to straight pieces on the outside with one chunk on the crown with a totally different course and coiled sort of texture. Its been almost 4 years and I still have no idea how to get rid of that texture or how to style my hair
My hair use to be pin straight and i never grew super long either. one day i went to the salon and got it cut above my shoulders with bangs. my mom noticed as soon as i washed it my hair was instantly frizzy with a wave but very frizzy pattern it’s been the same ever since then and that was about eight years ago. we believe my hair pattern changed because the stylist cut my hair with a blade almost like a straight blade instead of actual scissors. could this be why my hair pattern permanently changed? if so can you please tell me how i can make it go back to pin straight possibly a different way to get my hair cut to make it back to straight.
Hey, I’m a 12 year old girl (I turned 13 about a month ago.) My mom has beautiful curly hair, and is telling me that my hair may start to curl. I was reading the passage and I saw that you mentioned that curly hair follicles have a hook at the end. Well, my hair is straight but with a massive hook at the end. I have barely even started puberty but I would like to know if you think my hair might start to curl up over time. I would really appreciate any help/ advice given, thank you!!
Sorry! I ment to say I’m a 12 year old girl!! Not 12!!
Hi Katerina, it’s hard for me to say as I haven’t seen your hair, and curly hair can change anytime. It sounds like your mum is excited that you might inherit her beautiful curls. Just keep looking after your hair, washing and conditioning and avoiding too much heat styling, and you’ll have healthy hair. Good luck xx
I’m glad I found this. I read so many comments, but it is hard to find comments similar to my story. I’m half black and half white. I was born with straight hair and I think (but can’t really remember) that I had straight hair for a good few years before it went super curly. Like spirals and I hated it so much. I have always wanted straight hair. Since after giving birth to my son 2 years ago, I noticed my hair changed to almost way. I’m wondering if it will stay this way or even become more straight? I would love that. I’m totally loving how much easier it is to manage my new hair. No more loads and loads of conditioner and it actually looks nice without so much products. I love it so much. Hope it stays.
My hair was very thick, long and somewhat wavy until I had my children. I now have half the hair thickness (but still a lot) and waist length SPIRAL curls.. I kid you not. How on earth did I end up having spiral curls? I am the person that has no patience for hairdressers and my idea of a hair cut is shaving my head once every four or five years (to raise money for charity). I like the curls, and would’ve appreciated them as a teenager when I tried to use curling tongs to achieve the semblance of curls! Life is full of lovely irony!
I’m 15 years old and well I don’t really understand my hair . My mom has curly hair and my day wavy but for a while as a kid my hair was pretty straight with little wave .when I turned 12 on the side of my head in sections there was a wave starting to appear .Now my hair or waves are starting to kinda turn in little wavy spirals but not really curly only in the same sections of my head while my front hair is super straight and under my hair also . I don’t know what to do but I’m hoping or wondering if later on my hair will turn fully wavy or curly . I don’t know what products to use or to treat my hair as if it was curly or straight.
My hair has always been dead straight and both of my parents and my brother have super wavy hair! I’m 21 and I’ve noticed that all of my baby hairs at the front of my head and underneath are going wavy and into ringlets!
I’ve always wanted wavy hair, does this mean it’s going to happen? And is there anything I can do to help my hair go wavy/curly?
My hair is just starting to turn curly and I’m very happy about it I love curly hair but not all my hair is curly yet. The front of my hair is curly and the rest is wavy, Do you know how long it will take for the rest of my hair to turn curly?
After my 4th child, my hair went from bone straight to curly. Some that have known me for my straight hair, don’t believe me when i tell them that pregnancy/hormones made my hair curly.
They think i am curling my hair when i wear it curly-because i tend to straighten it daily…I had my 4th child 14 yrs ago and my curl is not going anywhere!
hi, my hair used to be pretty straight, but now the newly grown hair are so dry, frizzy and curly..my hair length is still straight but i am not understanding why did they change the texture 🙁 i really want my silky shiny hair back, i am seriously hating these new curly dry frizzy hair.
I had pin straight fine hair until hair until my early 30s. My hair now is super curly. I say get a great cut and embrace your curls. It s probably permanent.
My hair change happened about 6 months back, age 26. I’ve always had perfectly iron straight hair . I had 2 previous pregnancies and nothing changed. I started developing wave, then curls during a third pregnancy, about mid August. I’m not exactly sure how long I was pregnant, maybe a month or two but miscarrid in late September. It took me a good while to realize that the pregnancy was the reason for the change but the curls are still here.
I must say that my curls definitely surprised me. I have very fine hair and it has always been stick thin and straight – which all of my dad’s side of the family has. My mom’s hair was straight until she went to Arizona and poof! Her hair is extremely curly now. Both of my siblings started off with straight hair but my sister’s was curly by the end of elementary school and my brother’s by roughly 11th grade. I turn 30 soon and my hair all of a sudden decided to curl. Some days are just plain wavy/frizz and others have gorgeous ringlets naturally. It also doesn’t help that I live in a state with extreme humidity. I’ve read your article and it surprises me why mine only now started to change even though I’ve had 3 kids and the last one was 4 years ago. I’m curious to find out if my children, who now have straight hair, will end up with curly as they get older. 🙂
Hi Melissa, I’m also surprised by the different ages that curls appeared in your family! I wonder when/if your children’s hair will change? Hope you’re adjusting ok to the new curls xx
Hi,
I am 23. Before 3 years my hair were straight and a little wavy but not curly. I got sick at that time and as a result of being on medication for longer time, my hair started to fall. At that time I got my hair cut to above shoulder length. Now I recovered my hair volume but as the new hair grown after hairfall, my hair grows straight from root and becomes curly at the end. I liked my old texture but I love my new hair type. I love the curls at the end of my hair.
Hi Vaishali, hope you’re doing ok now and I hope your curls keep growing in too 🙂 xx
I had straight hair (so straight my mom would hot roll it for church) up until I hit puberty at around 12 or 13. I hated my curly hair until I realized what products to use & never to get it cut really short. I just turned 40 last year & now my curl has turned into waves. I miss my curly hair!
i used to have really pretty mostly straight hair , then i cut it about a year ago and it got very frizzy and wavy . is there any way to fix it because i miss my pretty straight hair . i cant even wear my hair down without straightening it.
i have had straight to very loose waves my whole life. i recently moved to a very humid climate and instantly i noticed my hair changed. i moves when i was 12 and am now almost 14. started off with maybe 2b hair and now have 3c/3b hair. it has gotten thicker, coarser and curlier day by day. and the part that confuses me the most is that my whole entire family all has pin straight hair. no one on either side of my family has curly hair. i am the only one. i have no clue how my hair got to be the way it is but my family doesn’t understand when u ask for a hair product. it’s difficult. many people ask me if i’ve permed it or died it (since its very blonde). people have no answer to why my hair suddenly changed so much
I feel you, Makenzie! It’s really normal for hair to change around your age, just like mine did. Your hair may keep changing and I hope you find a routine that works for your curls xx
A couple months ago, my hair was stick straight, so I thought it would be safe to get a fringe. But about 2 das after I got it, my hair turned crazy frizzy and curly and weird. So now I have a puffball on my forehead for a fringe that I have to pin back, and I have to straighten my hair every time it gets wet and dries again. It’s pretty frustrating. I am learning how to deal with it though!
oh wow! That sounds really frustrating, hope you discover some fun new styles along the way xx
I know this is an older post, but I figured here would be the best place to ask!
I’ve been reading through a lot of the comments on this post (I found your blog about a week ago?) and I’ve been wondering, I would be nearing a 7 year mark, as I’ve heard you talk about a 7 year cycle with hair. My mom has very wavy/curly hair mix, and her side of the family tends towards having naturally curly or wavy hair. Up until now, I’ve always had pencil straight hair, even through “becoming a woman” and such, but it is possible that my hair is actually beginning to become curly?
I’ve noticed that if I don’t brush or comb it after a shower until it’s dry, it will be fairly wavy and have a lot of body too it, but once I comb it, most of that goes away. I decided to try not combing it this last time I washed it to see what would happen, in case my hair is actually becoming curly. (Which I would love by the way, even though others have said otherwise, I’ve always loved my mom’s hair) I have no definite ringlets or anything like that, but I’ve noticed that even in the small strands on the sides of my face and at the base of my neck when I’ll braid my hair, they’ll tend to want to have a slight curl to them? If I twist them just slightly they hold the shape rather well.
So this is a bit long to just ask–is it possible my hair is on it’s way to becoming curly or more wavy?
Hi! It sounds like it! Hair can change at lots of points in our lives, and continues to change. I would keep experimenting and let your hair air dry to see how it goes. You could try diffusing your hair to encourage more curl too. Good luck and so glad you want to embrace the curl xx
Hii, so my dad has curls and when I was a baby I also had curly hair. But as my hair started to grow longer, it also grew heavier and it lost the curl… my baby hairs still have a little curl to them, when wet. The rest are only waves now. My brother still has his curly hair, he even had his curls longer than my hair was straight once. 20 years later, I’m still trying to get my curl back…. do you have any idea how I could get them back?
Hi Vanity! Yes I’ve got some tips here that I hope will help you https://www.hairromance.com/2013/01/how-to-get-your-curl-back.html xx
I once had straight hair when I was younger but now during puberty it was super curly. But now at age 15 the front of my hair is half curly it is really weird. I love my curls and don’t want to see them leave.
I’ve always had extremely straight hair even though my mum has extremely curly hair. It is super greasy , but whenever my hair is wet it gets really knotted and stiff especially when I put conditioner on it even if it’s only a small amount. Also my hair gets static before it rains or before a storm but somehow it doesn’t get wavy or curly it just sticks up like a hazard. It’s really strange does anyone know why this happens.
Well, mine situation is unusual as I am on the opposite end of the hormone change. I have had very straight think hair all my life. I always hated it and would try and make it want it curly with everything available. Hot rollers, stream rollers, curling irons you name it I tried it. In the immediate time after they each worked a little bit, but eventually the curls would fall out within an hour or two, I assume it was also the weight of my hair that made this happen. Perms worked very well for me as they would last nearly a year, but they weren’t in style for very long, so I was back to my stuck straight hair. Around 47 I started menopause and about a year later I notice a little wave had come in my hair. I am now 50 (ugh) and over the last 6-8 months my hair has become totally curly!!! I mean like Shirley Temple curly!!! Everyone thinks I’ve gone back to getting perms. It has n been a challenge trying to learn how to work with it to style it but I like it!! I saw this “curl plop” method online and LOVE it! No miss no fuss! So easy, my hair does it by itself. I’m assuming as you’ve said-that hormones are what made the change happen. Just thought I’d share for anyone on the opposite spectrum of the age/hormone situation. I don’t know anyone else whose had this kind of change happen. Have you heard of it happen with others?
I love having my naturally straight hair, but lately I really like to put my hair into two braids. My question is, with the fact that I braid my hair a lot more will my hair eventually start to become naturally wavy/curly instead of straight?
Hi Lindsay, your hair might seem wavy from the braids but this won’t change your hair’s natural texture xx
Hello! For me this straight-to-curly hair change was not a positive experience because it happened on my eyebrows. I have, or should I say had, beautifully thick eyebrows that required no styling or the use of tweezers because they were perfect. After my third pregnancy they became curly. Now can you imagine think dark curly eyebrows?
To keep them in place I need to straighten them monthly and use hair gel on a daily basis otherwise they will be frizzy.
Do you have any tips or advice regarding this issue?
Thank you!
Hi Jerusha, that’s so interesting and I wish I had more advice but I haven’t heard of this before. Would trimming your eyebrows help? Do you use a normal hair gel or an eyebrow gel? xx
I’m 13… I used to have frizzy wavy hair until 3 months ago I tried straitening shampoo but it only makes the top half straiter even though I make sure I apply it on the bottom half of my hair do u know what would fix this.
Hi ….I’m 19….I had a good bouncy hair …..everyone used to touch my hair and say it’s really good ….even my beautician ….and now my front hairs alone bad wavy crushed and frizzy…what’s wrong with that …now I hate it …I can’t even do straightening or smoothing for that part alone…what’s wrong can it be solved
My hair was always wavy but never curly. It actually started changing just this past couple of years.(I am 49) Not sure why. I went from long silky waves to afro dry curls in 2 years. My stylist noticed it too. she said my texture is a lot different than it was.
I had curly as a one year old and then wavy all my life until I tuned 35 when it changed dramatically. I started to have dandruff which i never had and started to look afro and curly exactly like my mom’s . My mom had always afro curly…we are white Caucasian. My family can’t believe the change and me neither.
I had baby fine, stick straight hair until I started menopause. Then I noticed that if I didn’t blow dry it I started to see waves in it. It gradually got curlier and coarser, and in about a year I had curly hair with lots of body. This was what I had wanted my entire adult life, I was really excited, but then I went through the most stressful part of my life, and now I’m on disability and I don’t even have the energy to shower very often let alone style my hair. My advice is, enjoy the fact that you can get out of bed every day and don’t put too much energy into worrying about your hair. Sometimes you get exactly what you want and lose everything that matters.
thanks for sharing your story, Leah. I hope things start to look up for you, sending love xx
. I’m 66 years old. All my life my hair was straight now the back of my head has become curly, while the sides and top have remained straight. It’s a nightmare.
The exact same thing is happening to me, though I am 49. I always wanted curly hair with the top and the sides remaining straight it’s awefull. I have very long hair..all one length no layers and it goes to the end of my bottom…im glad to know I’m not the only one with this weird phenomenon. I had a surgical hysterectomy 20 years ago so it’s weird it’s happening now.
Thanks for your valuable article
I was 13 when my hair started going curly and wavy. My real problem was to have thick and rough hair,
It’s so hard to be brushed lt feels like you have tiny needle above your head!!!you are right puberty is the
Cause.I wish I had my former smooth and soft straight hair.
My hair was sraight all my life, I even had to get perms at the age 23. They grew out and I had straight hair again. I used curling iron, to get nice waves. But a year ago, at the age 28, curls started growing under my straight hair, I had to keep my hair in a ponytail and now my hair is all curly. And I don’t like it, I do try, but I had such beautiful long and straigt hair before but now I kind of look like a young old lady.
I really wish I could make them straight again. Whenever I flatiron them, I look so much better, like my old me.
Whyyyyyy?!
that’s so interesting! You can see from the comments that our hair chnages for so many reasons. They say our hair is in a 7 year cycle so it makes sense that it started to change at 28. If you really miss your straight hair, consider getting a brazilian smoothing treatment from a salon to get straight hair again xx
This 7 year cycle thing seems interesting, maybe one day I’ll get my straight hair back, but I doubt it. 🙂
I wanted to say that I didn’t have a baby at the time my hair started to change, nor a chemo or anything like that. My son is 10, so that didn’t affect my hair changing.
My mother has curly hair, but she had them all her life. My lil sister now is afraid that her straight hair will get curly too one day. 😀
I did try vegan diet and paleo and eating clean, so maybe that might have been an issue.
I guess we’ll never know the real reason.
But I’ve been thinking about Keratin treatment, we’ll see.
I am 15, and around 13 I cut my hair into a short length, from my lower back to my shoulders, and my hair used to be pin straight. But ever since I cut my hair it has been super poofy and curlyish. I have a sister and her hair is still pin straight, now, Im not sure whether my hormones changed it or maybe since my hair was long (and my hair is super thick) and heavy it weighted it down, and when I cut it and it got short it also lossed weight and got lighter and now it is curly. Anyway I just want my normal hair back, cause now it is hard to straighten or just wear without having to style. Any tips to reduce frizz or maybe make it straighten again? Thank you
Hello, i’m a boy but when i was little i had curly hair.
When i became 3years old my dad shaved all my hair & then my curls didn’t came back so right now i am 15years old & i still have straight hair. But is it possible that i can get my curls back? Please answer back
Hi Gus, curls can always change! Do your parents have curly hair? Is your hair straight or slightly frizzy? Frizz can be a sign that your hair is becoming curlier x
I was born with jet black curly hair. By the time I was two my hair started to lighten and straighten. The summer between 3rd and 4th Grade my grandmother had min hair chopped off above my shoulders, it was almost to my butt, and permed. I got a perm twice a year since it had no body, and she hated trying to work with it otherwise. When I started cosmetology school and found out coloring my hair would do the same thing, I vowed to never get another one again. By 2004 my hair wasn’t completely straight but it definitely wasn’t wavy either. In April of 2006 I found a wavy pattern about 3 inches from my scalp, within 4 months I recieved my first straightener for my birthday. I knew the change was due to my pregnancy with my oldest son in 2005. In 2012 I had my youngest son and now almost 5 years later my hair has large ringlets when it’s wet that are only waves when it’s dry and just looks like a big frizzy mess. We have a love hate relationship these days. I want to wear my curls but they always fall flat.
I love hearing your curl story! There are so many factors that affect our hair. If your curls are there, try experimenting with different products and techniques and you should be able to keep some definition once your hair dries xx
I was born with very straight but thick hair and had it throughout my childhood.so around 4th-6th grade my hair started to turn very frizzy but still straight. My hair was starting to get slightly wavy in seventh grade, but still very dry and frizzy (mind you my hair was waist length) . Then in eighth grade I got the big chop and my hair was then shoulder length and turned from 2a hair to 2b hair! Its been two years since the big chop and my hair is now 2c ! Now I know how to properly care for it and steer away from drying ingredients like sulfates and parabens.
Love that your hair is getting curlier! xx
Hello hello! I’ve always had hair straight and flat as a board, but ever since I started my period (back in 2013. I’m currently 14) my hair has begun getting frizzy and having a natural wave. For my mother, the same thing happened to her the first time she got pregnant, and she now has unruly curls that I absolutely love, so it is probably the hormone change that triggers it in my family. I absolutely love the idea of having curls in my hair, so I was wondering, is there anything I can do to stimulate curls in my hair, such as special products, routines I can do, or anything else?
Hi Camellia, I love that you want more curls! Yes, you can follow curly styling routine (check out mine here) and see if this helps to encourage more curls xx
My hair was straight and silky smooth until I hit puberty, at which point it became a bit wavy and greatly increased in thickness. If I tied my hair back or brushed it well when it was still moist it would look pretty much straight again.
Then in my late 20s or possibky early 30s it went curly.
And I mean really curly, to the point my hair is unrecognisable.
I wonder if the enormous amounts of chronic stress altered my hormones and gene expression, as it has many other areas of my health.
It’s very pretty, in fact people call it beautiful, but sometimes I hate it.. Because it is a constant reminder of how much I’ve changed, inside and out, and it makes me sad to think that even my outside has changed to reflect the changes on the inside. I look at my hair and I see the irreversible damage of physical and mental breakdown and suffering.
I’ve accepted it but it still sometimes freaks me out how little control I’ve had over my body.
thanks for sharing your curl story with us, and I’m sorry it reminds you of a painful time. It could be that your hair was going to become curly anyway, regardless of the other events in your life. My hair is now the curliest it has been too and so we share a similar curl path x
I noticed a ware in the back of my hair a couple of months ago. Now it is also wavy in front. Yesterday, out in the hot, humid Texas heat. I had ringlets all across my forehead. It could not be managed. I have short hair that has been extremely straight (and getting thinner) since I was a child. I was a bald baby until age 2. It grew in blond and curly. That did not last long. My hair was okay until it started thinning about 6 or 7 years ago. I’ve tried different shampoos and treatments to make my hair look thicker or even grow hair. Nothing worked. I began taking biotin, a supplement for hair, skin, and nails. That’s one possibility. Almost 4 months ago, my sleep doctor changed my sleeping prescription. I had severe rebound insomnia. For two or three weeks, I barely slept. He gave me several different prescriptions. I also tried OTCs. It took over 3 months to find something to help me sleep successfully. That was a very stressful time for me. By the way, I’m a 71 year old retired teacher, mother, grandmother, great grandmother. Therefore, I have experienced a great amount of stress before. So far, I’m loving my new wavy, thicker hair. My hairdresser was surprised and pleased. When I asked the question about straight hair going curly, I didn’t expect to get an answer. So pleased to find you.
thanks for sharing your story, Linda – that’s amazing! Glad you’re enjoying your new waves and curls. Hope you’re feeling ok and sleeping well too xx
My hair was always straight and thick. About four years ago (age 51) it started to develop a very stubborn wave. I was devastated because I love straight hair and I didn’t know what to do with it. About 6 months ago I noticed it was getting easier to style and today the wave is gone. I’m so confused.
oh that’s weird CarolynAnn, has anything else in your routine changed? Or have you had a haircut?
When I was little my hair was a light brown color(my hair has changed colors a few times on it’s own since I was born) and it was always a curly wavy type. And then as I got older my hair got darker, and although it was still wavy, it was more on the straight side. Now I’m 16 and my hair, for a few weeks now, has suddenly been growing curly. But only the part of my hair above the back of my neck and the hair on the top of my head. The rest still grows wavy and it makes my hair look INSANE. I don’t think it’s going to be too hard for me because I have a sister and a mom who’ve had curly hair since they were born so I know how to deal with it. Plus, my hair’s always been a frizzy mess, the only difference is that now it’s going to be a curly frizzy mess. I have a feeling I’ll like it more, I’ve ALWAYS wanted curly hair. Probably because it runs in my family and that made me want it. I really hope the rest starts growing curly because like I said, it looks INSANE. I have bangs- not really, they’re sorta long now but literally the bottom half of them is wavy-straight and then like the 3 or 4 inches it has grown since I’ve cut ’em is curly. Crazy.
Also technically I’m not 16- not yet. Tomorrow I will OFFICIALLY be 16. Yayy.
BTW, it says I posted this comment the 25- why? It’s the 24, das weird.
I’m in Australia so I’m a day ahead 😉 xx
Happy birthday! I hope the rest of your curls catch up! Mine did, but it did take time xx
I am 65 and all my life I have had thin straight hair which I kept cut short. Then last August I was rushed into hospital with pneumonia and almost died. About a month later I noticed my hair falling out at an alarming rate, this went on for a few weeks then slowed down. Then about 2 months ago I noticed my hair was growing back – curly! I now have very thick curly hair which I hate – as a child I would have given anything to have curly hair LOL
wow – that’s incredible! Hope you’ve recovered fully and hope you work out an easy way to style your new curls x
I’m 62 and I’m the last month my white hair has started to curl. I love it! Since my hair is fairly short it’s been easy to take care of it– just my fingers and a light blow dry. But since I went through menopause 18 years ago I’m mystified as to what caused the hormone change.? Until the white started coming in my hair had the texture of mouse fur. So the curls are very welcome. Lots of positive comments too!
I love that you love your new curls, Kate! xx
I spent my entire adult life in the Marine Corps. Fresh high and tight every single week. I have since retired (after 23 years) and am letting my hair grow out; much to my surprise, my hair is now curly. I love it. Thanks for your website, it’s fun to read other’s accounts of going through the same experience.
Thanks Tom! So glad to have helped 🙂
*plus do you have any tips for stopping curly hair from frizzing so much in the rain?
THANK YOU SO MUCH xxxx
Wow, I can’t believe how many comments I can relate to! All my young life I had the straightest smoothest hair, but I took that for granted. I always complained it was a boring straight brown. When I was about 12 I noticed it started to have a wave in it, and I liked it. But then it started to really curl and frizz. I thought maybe it was how I slept on it, but that didn’t seem to be the case. It’s been curly/frizzy for years now, and I still can’t decide if I like it or not. I always used to love having my hair down, but my hair seems to frizzy for that now. Plus one side of my head is curler than the other, and its completely natural that way. Most days I end up putting it in a pony tail. Any tips on how to manage my unrequited curls?
it can take time to figure out your curls as they’re so unique – I always recommend experimenting to see what works best for you. Here’s my routine – how to wash and style curly hair xx
Hi my name is Erika I’m 16 all my life even to this day I’ve had really thick hair when I was around 12 I noticed a couple frizzies and a few waves and just brushed it off since then my hair has gone full crazy! I used to be able to brush my hair and blowdry it now if I even look at either of those things my hair will frizz up. It can’t decide if it wants to be frizzy, straight, curly or wavy as I have a combination of all. My hair is very coarse and long (down to my hips) and I just have no idea how to tame the frizz please helpppppppp
