Curly hairstyle tutorial – The Double Bun

May 13, 2013 By Hair Romance 22 Comments

Welcome to a week of hairstyle tutorials for curly hair!

My hair is naturally curly. You can read my tips for styling curly hair and my curly hair routine, and I love wearing my curls out.

However I usually straighten my hair for my hairstyle tutorials and there are a few reasons I do this. It’s easier to photograph, and clearer to show the steps in straight hair. Sometimes it can take a few attempts to get all the photos for a tutorial, and straight hair is easier to keep styling. If I keep touching my curly hair, it gets frizzy and the curls go out of shape.

These tutorials are great for second (or third!) day curly hair. If you have straight hair, you can also give them a try!

Hair Romance - Double Bun Hairstyle in curly hair

I’m starting this week of curly hair tutorials with the Double Bun. Why do one bun when you can do two?

The double bun is a great style for all hair types. In fine hair, it gives the illusion of volume. Conversely in thick hair, it balances out the weight of your hair.

Hair Romance - The Double Bun Hairstyle for curly hair

The Double Bun is best suited to medium length hair. You can do this hairstyle in hair that’s as short as a lob to around bra strap length hair. You’ll need strong bobby pins, and for longer hair you can also use larger hair pins and a couple of hair elastics.

Step-by-step:

  1. Twist the front of your hair back. If you have a fringe / bangs, you can leave them loose or twist them back into the hairstyle. I like to keep a little height at the front of this hairstyle, so you can backcomb your hair if you want more height.
  2. Section your hair for the first bun. Gather approximately half your hair at the back of your head. For longer hair or thick hair, your can secure this section with a hair elastic for added hold.
  3. Twist the section around to form a bun. Secure the bun with bobby pins or hair pins.
  4. Repeat with the rest of your hair, twist it up and around into a bun. Pin in place with bobby pins. If you have thick or long hair, remember you can secure it in a ponytail for extra hold.

This style is very elegant!! 2 buns definitely better than 1.
How many pins would you normally use in this style? Any padding or teasing?
And also, is that your natural hair colour or do you have foils??

Hi Brooke! Thanks so much. I probably use around 2-5 pins per bun. I haven’t used any padding here as my curly hair has a lot of volume. If your hair is fine or straight you can definitely tease your hair or use padding. I colour my hair and change it up quite a lot now so there’s a lot of different foil highlights in there 🙂

hi sorry to ask what may be obvious to others but do u link the 2 buns in some way or are they totally separate. I have curly hair too and this would be great for winter school run mornings when its too cold to go out in wet hair

Good question Esther, and it kind of depends on how the two buns are sitting. I do them independently, one above the other. Then if they are sitting a little far apart, I put a bobby pin or two through both buns linking them. It also helps make the style a little more secure x

My curly hair is LONG and super weighty. I have run out of things to do with it! Getting a trim next Friday. I’m so trying this today when I finally get out of my pj’s and into some real clothes. Now I’m excited! Thanks for the inspiration!

I really love this especially what you did with the front bit of hair. I’m never sure what to do with the front of my hair when tying it up because of I just pull it back it tends to straighten out the curl a bit and look very flat. This is a really good idea though and would probably help keep the curl. I’ll definitely be trying this out. x

Thanks Maria! I don’t like my hair flat at the front and a little twist keeps it in shape. Let me know how it goes in your hair! x

I tried it out today and it was fab! Especially the little twist at the front. I have a feeling i’ll be wearing that little twist a lot from now on. Keep up the amazing work! x

Love this tutorial. Would you post a link to your favorite strong bobby pins? I apologize if you have already posted this and I missed it. Thanks so much.

Thanks Molly! I love the 555 Goriki brand pins but any professional bobby pin from a beauty supply store will do x

I’ve actually never thought to do two buns! I am going to try this only the days when I’ve got some product in my hair to texture it a little since my freshly washed hair is sleek straight and too smooth to look as good as your hair in this style. 🙂

Your face profile is really pretty, like a character perfect. Sorry if that’s weird to say but I’m a painter and I’ve studied quite a few faces. 😀 you usually show your hairstyles with a side shot so that’s why I’ve noticed.
