How long can you make a blowdry last in your hair?
I’m currently at six days but I think I’ve pushed it to the limit. One of the bad things about curly hair (dryness) is actually a great thing when you want a style to last.
When I was playing around with this hairstyle, I was sitting at around five days post blowdry. My hair still looked ok but it didn’t feel that great. That’s why I love braids so much.
If you hair still looks ok, don’t wash it. Instead do a quick and easy braid and you’ll be ready in no time.
By the way, if you’re wondering what the difference between a braid and a plait is, the answer is geography. In Australia and the UK, we use plait which is the same as the US braid. When we say braid, we usually mean French braid.
But there are so many types of braids it can be confusing.
A plait is always the simple, basic braid. It’s the building block for all my easy hairstyles because you can always do it in your own hair.
Easy plaited updo hairstyle tutorial
What you need:
- Messy hair
- 2 small clear hair elastics
- Bobby pins
Step-by-step:
- Separate the top half of your hair for the first plait.
- Create a plait (braid) by splitting your top section into three equal sections. Cross the right over the middle, then the left over the right and continue down.
- Secure the end of the braid with your elastic.
- Plait the bottom section. Repeat the same steps on the bottom section so you have two plaits (braids) in your hair.
- Roll the bottom plait into a bun. Curve your plait around to form a bun and pin in place with bobby pins. Don’t forget to tuck the ends in!
- Wrap the top plait around the bun. My hair isn’t that long so it just fits around my bun and I’ve tucked the ends under. Pin in place with bobby pins.
Styling Tips
- Embrace messy hair – my hair was blowdried for this look but it would look fabulous in curly or wavy hair.
- Use small elastics – the smaller elastics are much easier to hide in the finished style.
- If you have really long hair – you’ll end up with a larger, statement bun which would look beautiful!
- If you have fine hair – remember to stretch out your braids before making the bun. This will make your hair seem thicker.

THANK YOU!!! I am 35 years old and finally managed really nice updone hair with this style. (Its not as sad as it sounds – my hair looks great just hanging long and loose which is why I never learned styling it. Every formal occasion has been awkward though and Ive either gone with a sleek(ish) pony tail or worn the hair long in the end – promising myself that next time I’ll have a professional help me. And then I stumbled upon your excellent site and got inspired and bold enough to try this style for yesterdays wedding attendance: win!

While your hair is thicker than mine, it’s the same length and curl as mine and I was wondering if you have any current pictures of your hair when curly and front facing? I need help getting my layers cut right and while I LOVE your tutorials and side pictures, and front faced photo with your curly layers would be awesome!

Hi Rosie, I’ll try and take some pics. I have long layers and a few shorter pieces cut around cheek and chin length. This post has some pics https://www.hairromance.com/2014/08/a-new-solution-to-tame-frizz-that-even-works-for-curls.html xx

Oh I love this hairstyle. Tried it this evening and it just sits really nicely. I think it’s because the top layer is loose. I have done a variation with plaited pigtails before when I made a mistake doing another one of your tutorials (the one with 4 plaits wrapped around each other to form a loose bun, I forgot 2 of them!!! That looks quite nice too)

Thanks so much for trying it Tracy! π

This look is adorable! I’m hopeless at hair but you’ve made this look easy enough that I just may try it. I generally wash my hair every second day as it gets quite oily but maybe this will be a good option if I just can’t be bothered taking the time to wet my hair! I’ve also been meaning to ask what your thoughts are on dry shampoo and which products you recommend for darker hair (no one likes the white powder on dark hair look!).

Thanks Michelle! I LOVE dry shampoo. Batiste has a dry shampoo that’s coloured for dark hair. And check my post on dry shampoo mistakes as you shouldn’t have to worry about the white marks x
