French braid bun hairstyle tutorial

Hair Romance - French braid bun hairstyle

I never get sick of braids. Just when I think they need to be more complicated, a classic style like this is all I need to remind me of the beauty of simplicity.

My French braid bun tutorial is a very relaxed and loose braid that is finished in a side bun.

Messier braids feel more adult to me. Whenever I try and wear a super neat and precise braid it feels too childish. I much prefer the bohemian feel of messy braids.

Thanks again to my lovely model, Rosalie. I was tidying up my hard drive when I rediscovered this tutorial we shot. Last year she let me give her purple ombre hair which was on trend with Radiant Orchid as the 2014 Colour of the Year.

If you prefer neat braids you can easily modify this braid hairstyle to be more even and precise. Just add in smaller sections and pull the braid tighter to keep it in place.

If relaxed, bohemian braids are more your style then all you need to do is follow the tutorial below.

Step-by-step

  1. Starting at your right temple, take a 1-2 inch section and split it into three.
  2. Begin a French braid that runs diagonally from your right temple to below your left ear. Cross the right section over the middle, then the left over the right. On the next cross over, add in a large section of hair to your braid.
  3. Continue your braid, adding in very large sections until all your hair is part of the braid.
  4. Finish in a regular braid (plait). Secure the end of your braid with a small clear hair elastic.
  5. Curve the braid up and around to form your bun. Tuck the ends of your braid underneath and pin in place with bobby pins.
  6. Finish with hairspray if you want the style to hold all day.

Style tips

  • Loose braids like this work best with long hair or long layers. Short layers will poke through the style. You can minimise this by curling the end of your hair under before starting to braid.
  • Hair keeps slipping? Spray some dry shampoo or sea salt spray onto your hair to add some grip and hold your hair in place.
  • Leave this as a side braid for a pretty weekend hairstyle.

I just recently tried this and it is my new favorite, go-to style. I love how easy it was to get the hang of!

hi there! i really appreciate your hair tutorials, especially the ones on curly hair since i’m a curly girl myself. =) it’s summer over here in the states, and i was wondering if you would be at all interested in doing a post on how to style summer hats (or hats in general) with curly hair. i only ever see hats on straight hair and it makes me think i’ll never be able to pull it off.

just a thought! have a lovely day! =)

That’s a great idea! I’ve been planning a few hat posts as I have some great tricks to avoid hat hair too 🙂

I will never get enough of braids, too. And I agree! Messy braids seem more adult with a hint of sexy. There is a carefree vibe to wearing braids that I really love too! But this is a fun new way to wear braids. 🙂
