Hair tutorial: How to create a faux bob

March 6, 2012 By Hair Romance 46 Comments

Hope you’re enjoying this week of hair tutorials!

For my next tutorial I’ve found a way to have short hair but without the big chop – a faux bob.

Inspired by NYFW and the the recent hair trend for faux bobs, as seen a Rodarte and Oscar de la Renta (pictured below).

What you need:

  • Hair elastic
  • Comb / Brush
  • Bobby pins
  • Hairspray

How to create a faux bob

Step by step

1 – Section your hair. Take a section from ear to ear and clip the top section away.

2-3 – Braid the bottom section. Plait or braid the bottom section, whichever is easier for you to do.

4 – Pin the plait up. Fold the plait around and pin in place flat against your head.

5 – Tease for volume.Β Backcomb the top section to create some volume and shape so your hair hides the braid. If you have fine hair you can use some hairspray underneath.

6 – Smooth the top. Comb or brush the top of your hair to smooth it.

7-8 – Make a low ponytail. Use an elastic to secure all your hair into a low ponytail. Make sure the hair on the sides is long enough to cover your ears. Keep this loose as this forms the side of your bob.

9 – Tuck the ponytail underneath.Β Pin the ponytail in place underneath. Put a bobby pin through the elastic and pin to the braid. This will make it really secure.

10 – You’re done! Maybe add a spritz of hairspray to catch any flyaways and smooth your hair.

This faux bob hairstyle also looks great with curls. If you have layers, work with them to create a more natural looking bob.

This is new style for me as my hair is only just long enough to make this work, but I think it will become a regular favourite.

Great tutorial! I’m normally really bad at hairstyle tutorials, but this one worked very well. Unfortunately it turns out that I look like Javier Bardem in There Will Be Blood with a bob, but nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I’m sorry to laugh but that is so funny! Adding a bit of a wave into your hair first and especially around the front is helpful to avoid that kind of bob look xx

This really works a lot better than other tutorials. This was a lifesaver for me since I had to have a bob for my play and my hair was to my waist. (and ridiculously thick). Thank you so much!

Wow This tutorial is so epic. I have thick hair all the way down to my bottom, I wonder if it’ll work for me… People will be shocked to see me with short hair. I want to give it a try so bad. Thank you, person! (I’m new. First time here!)

Thanks! Depending on how thick your hair is it will definitely work. To may it easier to tuck your hai runder you can also may three ponytails – one at each side and one at the back and tuck each side up separately. You may want to roll your ponytail up so it’s easier to pin in place underneath x

What would you do differently to get a faux bob with curls like the one Miley Cyrus had here:
    http://www.realbeauty.com/cm/realbeauty/images/7g/rby-wedding-hairstyles-Miley-Cyrus-2012-de.jpg

Or the one Julianne Hough had at the Emmys?

Would love a tutorial on those!!

Hi Arax, that’s a great idea for a tutorial! I would curl all your hair first. and maybe create three ponytails to tuck under so you get a more natural shape. It will help if you have shorter layers in your hair that you can leave loose at the front to make your faux bob look more real. Will try this soon for you x

I LOVE your hairstyle tutorials! but with my curls i can’t brush them when my hairs dry or i end up with a pouffy ball of fuzz, does yours do the same? and will these hairstyles work without brushing?
also can you put a pic up of the bob with curls?
    thanks xxx

Thanks Teejay! My curls do the same thing. I normally blow dry my hair straight for these tutorials. I use a round brush to smooth out my hair from wet. If I brush out my dry curls they go crazy. I’ll definitely post this with curls, great idea.

thanks! I just tried and I kind of did it haha, I need to work on my tecnique but it was a good 1st try πŸ˜‰ I have almost waist length hair so it’s more of a challenge but since I’ve been flirting with the idea of chopping it off this will satisfy me for awhile at least πŸ˜€

Wow, your hair is so long! Thanks for trying this style. I wonder if you also braided the ponytail you tuck under, that might help hold more hair up?

Hi Ash, I did a French braid, but you can just do a braid and pin it up in the same way. It depends how long and/or thick your hair is as to what sits better. Its actually quite an easy style and I wore this again on the weekend with curly hair.

I may have to try this….I’ve always hoped to find a way of making my very long hair short for the day! My hair is all the way down my back, but hopefully I can make it work. We’ll see how it goes!

This is such an easy style and really helps keep my hair versatile! It seems like everyone says to keep your hair long when it’s short and cut it short when it’s long so this a great way to take advantage of both looks. πŸ™‚ I’ll definitely be trying this tomorrow.

I’ve tried the faux bob and it’s so fun to change up your hair style! I’ve never seen it done by braiding the bottom section though. I’ll have to try it though!

Thanks Toni! The braid underneath is great if you have long hair or thick hair, as it makes it the bob lighter and keeps most of your hair out of the way.
