Hairstyle Tutorial: Topsy Turvy Ponytail

February 12, 2013 By Hair Romance 13 Comments

A twist on your everyday ponytail, this easy Topsy Turvy ponytail hairstyle tutorial is a guest post by Jo Castro of ZigaZag.

Hairstyle Tutorial - Topsy Turvy Ponytail How to

If you have shoulder length hair, here’s a lovely summer look that just lifts the hair from your neck and sweeps it off your face in a casual up-lift style.

What you need

  • Brush
  • Comb
  • Hair Elastic

Step by Step

It’s important to start with clean, conditioned hair blow dried straight or with a little volume. You might consider blow drying your hair with a round brush to create volume perhaps adding a little curl at the ends of your hair, but it your hair is dead straight like mine, then don’t worry because this style will work just as well.

  1. Wash and condition your hair and blow dry it until it’s fairly straight. Don’t worry if your hair is curly though as this style should still work ok with more bouffant hair.
  2. Pull back the top layer of hair as if you would to make a pony tail. Use a stretchy hair band (preferably in a neutral colour – I have used blue so that it stands out better in the photographs) and then secure the pony at around the nape of your neck.
  3. Gently push your finger into the hair just above the band. You want to make a hole big enough to push the remainder of the hair through. Do this carefully so that you don’t disrupt the pony.
  4. Begin threading the remaining hair into the hole. Do this in sections, one side, then the other, until all the hair has been swept across from the sides, and lifted up and over from the bottom section.
  5. Keep on gently pulling the hair through the hole and finger comb it at the bottom to straighten out, finishing off with a brush.
  6. When all the hair has been pulled through the hole, the hair band should be hidden, and the topsy turvy pony tail should be secure and look casual but reasonably neat. It may take a little practice to get it looking neat.

I was originally shown this style by my hair stylish, Tegan Tarrant from Niche for Hair in Bunbury, South Western Australia. The above topsy turvy I styled myself at home and I’ll be wearing it lots this summer probably with casual T-shirts and cut-off pants.

hehe this takes me back to my childhood. I love if you keep threading your hair (pony tail part) through until you have only enough left to tuck under you get a beautiful updo (if that makes any sense at all)

Love it Jo… have just tried it sitting here and it’s worked, I did it. My hair is long enough now and I’m enjoying doing more with it.

I’m glad you gave it a go Seanna! I know, I was also surprised how easy it was and after my hair stylist showed me I had initially thought, “Crikey, I’ll never manage it at home, no way!”
