I’m currently in the US and browsing the aisles of Walgreen’s when I spotted this.
This sparked a lot of comments on Instagram and Facebook, but I has to share it here too.
I confess I’ve had three perms in my lifetime – one was ok, one was a triumph and the last one was not so good. I’ve only ever had them done in salon and I had no idea they had home kits.
So tell me, would you ever buy this? Have you ever had a home perm?
Does the “fresh new scent” convince you?

Oh and she uses oglivie.

My mom has given herself perms and colors her own hair for at least 50 years and never had a problem. She has given me perms when I was younger and again never had a bad one. I wish I could do my own but my fingers won’t roll the rollers in back, I’m not that dexterous.

Your mom sounds amazing! I think she could have a good business if she wanted as there aren’t that many stylists that know how to perm now x

no no no! do not do the store perms! My mother did one and her hair was so burnt and split she had to cut most of it off. What really made it bad was the fact that she didn’t even leave the solution in as long as they wanted you to. I’ve always bought salon quality perm solution from salon product stores and have always had good luck. I would suggest trying Sally’s Beauty Supply before buying the crap off of the Walmart shelves.

Yikes! That sounds so awful! I can’t see how a home perm could ever be a good idea!

I am 35 years old, and my mom always gave herself and us home perms from the time we were little. Some were disasters, and some were successful. Judging from the haircuts she gave us also, a lot of that could have been my mom’s fault (not a detail oriented person). They have been around for ages!
I’d love a professional perm, since I like curly hair best. However, my hair is stick straight and grows an inch every month. A flat scalp halo surrounded by fluffy curls is just not attractive, so even the best perm is unfortunately not an option for me. 🙁

I haven’t tried a regular home perm, but maybe 10 years ago there was a fad for “temporary” perms that I gave a shot. (I was much more adventurous with my hair back then!) It never really got curly, and it never really straightened after that either… so fail on both counts! Then again, I’ve found that most “temporary” hair chemicals are nothing of the sort (colored hairspray notwithstanding).

I’ve had a number of home perms that turned out quite successful. My wonderful husband actually rolled my hair for the perms. While he did a fantastic job, it’s just so much safer (and requires a lot less time and threats of divorce) to visit a salon. 😉
Hair Romance says
Glad to hear they worked Ashley, and your husband must be a very patient man! x

Home perms have been around for years, my nan gave me one in my teens! It ended up lopsided because my aunt wound the rollers on one side and my nan wound the other. So one side had tighter curls than the other!
I’m a hairdresser now, and no, would not recommend it, it has disaster written all over it! An over processed perm is unfixable, unless you count a crew cut as a good solution!
Hair Romance says
oh no! I hadn’t thought about it ending up lopsided – yikes!

OMG…this is terrifying!! I’m thinking about getting a perm for the first time…I hear they can do looser curls more like waves (as opposed to the above photo) and really wanna try it out. Do you have any tips for perms? Salon perms that is 😉 I’m not adventurous enough for the home kit…but that fresh new scent is tempting!
Hair Romance says
That scent is tempting but go to a professional salon and don’t be afraid to ask LOTS of questions. You can get a good curl from a perm, but experience counts so make sure your stylist knows what they are doing. That’s a good idea for a post and I’ll try and put some more tips together for you x
