A ponytail is not my favourite hairstyle but let’s face it, they’re so easy to wear.
The issue I have with them is that weird dent that your hair band leaves in your hair when you take your ponytail out.
If I’ve gone to the effort of straightening my hair, the last thing I want to do is wear a ponytail that will leave a big dent in my hair like this.
In fact, I took the shot above after wearing a ponytail for only a few minutes. By the end of the day the dent or crease in your hair can be huge. All that effort to curl or straighten your hair goes to waste.
One of the reason I became interested in hair and doing upstyles was that my hair was too short for a ponytail. I was growing out a pixie cut and the Twist & Pin became my signature hairstyle.
Now that my hair is longer, I also find myself wearing a ponytail from time to time. I found a great trick to make the perfect curly ponytail but I was still stuck with the hair dent in straight hair.
Until I found this weird hair elastic.
How to avoid the ponytail dent
The invisibobble
The Invisibobble is like an old telephone cord. The twists create an uneven pressure on your hair so you don’t get that obvious dent. It’s still a strong hold hair elastic and is really comfortable to wear.
In the photo above I wore the invisibobble for hours and there’s just the hint of a mark in my hair. Unlike the regular hair band which left a mark in minutes.
I’ve been wearing these weird hair bands when I go for a run or to the gym. I love that I can wear my hair down straight after without the crazy dent or extra styling.
The only issue I have with them is that they are really ugly, but they work so I can put up with them for now.
Find them at Urban Outfitters, Topshop or Amazon.
Do you also dislike that ponytail dent? What’s your favourite hairstyle to wear to the gym?
The grab and go pony holders also work too. They’re really pretty! ?
Hi, I just wanna say how beautiful I think your hair looks in a ponytail. I love your roots and how they seem to flow from your hair tie ?
Hi! Does it have to be the same brand you said? I have some from Urban Outfiters but it isn’t that brand, also I find them really cute if you get them in the right color. Also to get them back in shape just wear them around your wrist for a couple hours!
Oh wow! What an amazing find! Seriously I’m obsessing over these products ? I’ve already gone and stalked their website, because this is something I have a serious need for. How did I never stumble upon these before ?
these are amazing Michelle! xx
Hey I got a similar really pretty hair elastic from the local hair store and it’s metals purple so I do think they’re ugly you just have to look around.
Hi
I unfortunately need to tell you that I hate it. I have got some (different types) but they have not worked very well :/ I have very thick and heavy hair, so it hasn’t managed to hold it strong enough and a ponytail was in complete mess after a while! It also loses elasticity after just one using (it gets twice as long). I use it only when I want to tie my hair very quickly and for a moment, e.g. before I really do my hair, in pyjama and only at home!
Oh no, sorry to hear that Monika, but it’s great to hear your experience. I have a trick for getting them back in shape – put them in a cup of bowl and pour hot (almost boiling) water over them – they shrink back to their original size! Hope this helps x
Thanks, I’m gonna try it!
You can also run a hair dryer over them!! Hot air shrinks them right back!! Ive also left them on my baseboard heater for a few minutes, in a pinch! After a few minutes – just like new!! Hairdryer is the quickest though!! I too still have marks from these. I have long, thick hair. It may work if I didn’t need to wrap it more than once, but putting it in as is – will last about 5 min! ? I feel terrible complaining about a ‘ponytail holder hair dent’ when people struggle with so much more…. but, that’s my fix for fixing the hair tie!! A hairdryer!! ?
(I realize this is YEARS old – prob found this fix years ago!! ? but… just incase!!)
I would really love to buy these cause having really thick hair I get ponytail dents all the time that I hate and this came along and saved me so I think I’m gonna purchase more
Thanks Destiny! X
sick of that dent. I wear a ponytail every day, all day. Thanks. Gonna go order them off amazon now!
Thanks Amy, they are great! Hope you love them too x
Have you tried sleeping in these? Is it uncomfortable, and/or does it come out?
Hi MJ, no I haven’t because I use this clip to hold my hair up at night. I think you’d get a good result if you twisted your hair into a top knot and secured it with this band 🙂
With naturally VERY curly and wavy hair, PT dent has been an on going problem for me. I picked up a couple of “scrunchies” over the years – one a handmade crochet “fuzzy” one, and then while serving as a missionary in Romania, I picked up one that is similar to what is shown here, but it’s a whole bunch of different colored strings (for lack of a better description) that are inter-woven/braided. I quickly learned that these two scrunchies DID NOT leave me with PT dent. Needless to say these two are my faves!!! So for those who can’t afford or can’t get the type mentioned/featured here, look for some like I’ve described.
Thanks for the suggestions Lora! x
I used to use these, but my hairstylist told me that these have a tendency to pull the hair, causing the hair to spilt easier. She said to use cloth type hair ties are gentler on the hair.
Thanks for commenting Luna, that’s so interesting to hear. I also like a hair bungee but it does still leave a dent in my hair.
Those invisibobble were everywhere here in the Philippines, but we do not call it like that. It’s super cheap (as in CHEAP) and very convenient to use 🙂
Hi! First off, I really like all your hairstyle ideas, will definitely be trying out some this weekend haha. I have a lot of hair, do you think that the Invisibobble will be able to maintain the ponytail high?
Thanks Bernarda! It’s pretty good but I would use a hair bungee for a really tight high ponytail if you have a lot of hair 🙂
Totally buying these. My hair looks perfectly beachy after it has been washed but as soon as I put it up I get dents/cowlicks and have to use a whole heap of styling tools to fix it!
You’ll love these Evangeline! x
I definitely have to try these now. I often wear my hair in a ponytail and the ponytail dent is hard to get rid rid of. Thank you Hair Romance!
Kind Regards
Linda
Thanks Linda 🙂
When my hair was longer I used to toss my hair into a pretty messy bun to hit the road and run. I’ve since cut my hair into a chin length bob, but still don’t want hair flying in my face as I pound the pavement.
I discovered sweaty bands at the running store. They are a great no slip band that keeps hair off of my face while I sweat. The best thing is that they are so pretty I can wear them on days I don’t feel like doing my hair. And…they are washable! You can find them at sweatybands.com
Great tip Tracy!
The only ponytail that seems to suit me is the high pony. An instant facelift too!
you rock the high pony xx
I found hair bungees on Amazon & love them. NO dent & the curl stays for overnight. Time to order more!
oh I love hair bungees too Susan! I still get a dent with them but I love them in curly hair as there are fewer tangles x
my hair is super thick and takes two elastics to hold it up all day. reckon these are up to the task? because i love the idea!
These are surprisingly strong but not sure if they could hold a high ponytail all day. A mid pony, well I would say yes but I’m not exactly sure how thick your hair is. I’d still give them a try.
OMG every girl here in Jakarta wears those, and I always thought they were so uggly! I totally get it now. OFf to the shop!
Thanks a million : )

they are weird but they are awesome 😉
I actually think they look cute! I saw them in a hairdressers a while back, now I know they have a use I might go back & get them!!
do it! I’m wearing one again now 🙂
I am definitely going to buy one of those to try! I dread having ponytail dents…

I dread ponytail dents too! These are a saviour.
This great invention has been around for some 5 years and shouldn’t be solely attributed to the brand you promote.
I found my savior in Malaysia and have been happily using it for a whole year until it got lost.
It’s very nice, works great with thick hair and definitely leaves no dents. It looks nice worn on wrist.
Thanks Luba Bee. I’ve not seen them before, how has no-one told me about these until now??
Haha, so, I was staring at the picture trying to decide if I could convince myself they were cute or quirky – and then I read down and saw you didn’t think they were attractive either and I felt a bit better. I’m not really bothered by ponytail dent, but, my hair has absolutely no hold to it, so I don’t think the dent sticks around very long.
yeah, they are so weird aren’t they? But I love that they work. I only wear them when I’m home or exercising. You’re lucky that your hair doesn’t hold onto kinks and dents xx
Until I master the art of braids or at least one up style (it’s on my bucket list,) I’ll be living in ponytails! The dent is the nemesis of ponytail wearers worldwide so I’m pleased there is an accessory that will save time and leave hair dent-free. I am so going to check these out! Thanks for sharing,
Ponytails are a necessary style and I have to say I’ve been wearing them a lot more since I got these hairbands xx
Foldover elastic works just as well, is much cuter & quite inexpensive if you purchase it wholesale & tie it for yourself. You can get any color/pattern you want to match your wardrobe/personal style.
I’ve found that the fold over elastic leaves the dent in my hair–not quite as quickly as regular ones, but still a big dent. They also lose their elasticity after a couple of weeks of daily use. I’m going to order some of these for me and my daughter. I showed them to her and she said they were really cute–she’s 14 and has super thick hair that is like braiding sausages when I braid it so I’m hoping they’ll work for her.
oh thanks interesting to hear Kristen. Maybe they don’t work as well in fine hair?
Great tip Jill!
The second link to ship over as doesn’t work.
Sorry Kristine, you can find them at Feel Unique – http://www.feelunique.com/brands/invisibobble
I use black ones and I have dark brown hair. I think you should try the clear ones. I really like these because they keep my ponytail in place and I don’t have to use any bobby pins.
thanks Becky, I think I will 🙂
Hello – I love your blog which I find on Bloglovin. You are PROLIFIC whew ! What I want to ask you is do you have any knowlege of the Vitamin H Biotin which is supposed to thicken hair and prevent hair from falling out. The contra-indications are that it can cause water retention. What is your experience of people taking this medication which is easily available over the Pharmacy counter ?
Hi Anne, thank you! Biotin is effective for hair, skin and nails but I’m not sure about side effects. With any supplement, I recommend talking to your doctor or pharmacist first to find out if they are right for you. Christina x
Thank you! I had seen them online but couldn’t quite convince myself to try them.
I know what you mean JJ, I wasn’t sure either but I think they’re great 🙂
Thank you for the product recommendation! I hate the ponytail dent! I actually think the twisty hair bobble thing looks cute, but I have an offbeat sense of style, so I can see it’s not for everyone. 🙂 Maybe you could tie a scarf around your ponytail to hide the elastic since you don’t like the look of it?
That’s a great idea Elizabeth! Maybe it’s just the pastel colour that’s not really me, I will get some of these in black & clear as well xx
Okay, I’m certainly going to have to buy one of these now! I abhor that dreaded ponytail line and it happens ALL THE TIME with my hair now. Thanks for the heads up!
They’re great, I was sceptical but they work x
I saw this at Walmart last week.
Did you try it? I think they’re awesome x
They aren’t helping my hair at all. Any other advice plzzz
Hi Izelle, are they leaving a mark in your hair? I’m surprised as they work really well for me. You could try using a clip instead of an elastic. I use a clau clip to put my hair up in a bun when I exercise and it works well. The one I use has a flat base and silicone inside the clips to stop it from slipping xx
They aren’t helping my hair at all. Any other advice plzzz
Can you sleep on it without it making a dent?
I haven’t tried because I sleep with my hair clipped up like this. This avoids dents and keeps my hair out of the way 🙂
ok?
Hi, i’m putting up with the same struggle but i think my dent is permanent. I used to wear ponytails all the time in school but now i don’t and the dent is still there. It goes away when i have a shower and comes back after i blow dry my hair. After i blow dry my hair, i put my hair in a bun with nothing to hold it in place and wear a tube cap for hair (it’s made from cotton)but it still seems to came back. Do you know why that happened? Do you have any advice?
Buy a small water bottle. Mist your hair in the creased area, making sure to get underneath as well. Do not over saturate. Medium heat from a hair dryer and a round brush or flat brush with tension will remove the line without having to redo your entire hair.
Thank you! i’ll be defiantly trying it.
@Mia Andrews did this work? I’m having the same problem. I think my dent is permanent.
Yes they really do work I got some in my fab fit fun box, I love them! And no hair dent!
thanks Laura!
Do you know where I can get some? I live in the United States
Hi Stephanie, you can find them at Urban Outfitters, Topshop or Amazon xx
