How to avoid the ponytail dent

September 25, 2014 By Hair Romance 79 Comments

Hair Romance - how to avoid that ponytail dent in your hair

A ponytail is not my favourite hairstyle but let’s face it, they’re so easy to wear.

The issue I have with them is that weird dent that your hair band leaves in your hair when you take your ponytail out.

If I’ve gone to the effort of straightening my hair, the last thing I want to do is wear a ponytail that will leave a big dent in my hair like this.

In fact, I took the shot above after wearing a ponytail for only a few minutes. By the end of the day the dent or crease in your hair can be huge. All that effort to curl or straighten your hair goes to waste.

One of the reason I became interested in hair and doing upstyles was that my hair was too short for a ponytail. I was growing out a pixie cut and the Twist & Pin became my signature hairstyle.

Now that my hair is longer, I also find myself wearing a ponytail from time to time. I found a great trick to make the perfect curly ponytail but I was still stuck with the hair dent in straight hair.

Until I found this weird hair elastic.

Hair Romance - how to avoid that ponytail dent in your hair - invisi bobbles

Hair Romance - Invisi bobbles Hair Romance - After wearing invisibobbles

The Invisibobble is like an old telephone cord. The twists create an uneven pressure on your hair so you don’t get that obvious dent. It’s still a strong hold hair elastic and is really comfortable to wear.

In the photo above I wore the invisibobble for hours and there’s just the hint of a mark in my hair. Unlike the regular hair band which left a mark in minutes.

I’ve been wearing these weird hair bands when I go for a run or to the gym. I love that I can wear my hair down straight after without the crazy dent or extra styling.

The only issue I have with them is that they are really ugly, but they work so I can put up with them for now.

Find them at Urban Outfitters, Topshop or Amazon.

Do you also dislike that ponytail dent? What’s your favourite hairstyle to wear to the gym?

Hi! Does it have to be the same brand you said? I have some from Urban Outfiters but it isn’t that brand, also I find them really cute if you get them in the right color. Also to get them back in shape just wear them around your wrist for a couple hours!

    Hi
I unfortunately need to tell you that I hate it. I have got some (different types) but they have not worked very well :/ I have very thick and heavy hair, so it hasn’t managed to hold it strong enough and a ponytail was in complete mess after a while! It also loses elasticity after just one using (it gets twice as long). I use it only when I want to tie my hair very quickly and for a moment, e.g. before I really do my hair, in pyjama and only at home!

Oh no, sorry to hear that Monika, but it’s great to hear your experience. I have a trick for getting them back in shape – put them in a cup of bowl and pour hot (almost boiling) water over them – they shrink back to their original size! Hope this helps x

You can also run a hair dryer over them!! Hot air shrinks them right back!! Ive also left them on my baseboard heater for a few minutes, in a pinch! After a few minutes – just like new!! Hairdryer is the quickest though!! I too still have marks from these. I have long, thick hair. It may work if I didn’t need to wrap it more than once, but putting it in as is – will last about 5 min! ? I feel terrible complaining about a ‘ponytail holder hair dent’ when people struggle with so much more…. but, that’s my fix for fixing the hair tie!! A hairdryer!! ?
(I realize this is YEARS old – prob found this fix years ago!! ? but… just incase!!)

With naturally VERY curly and wavy hair, PT dent has been an on going problem for me. I picked up a couple of “scrunchies” over the years – one a handmade crochet “fuzzy” one, and then while serving as a missionary in Romania, I picked up one that is similar to what is shown here, but it’s a whole bunch of different colored strings (for lack of a better description) that are inter-woven/braided. I quickly learned that these two scrunchies DID NOT leave me with PT dent. Needless to say these two are my faves!!! So for those who can’t afford or can’t get the type mentioned/featured here, look for some like I’ve described.

I used to use these, but my hairstylist told me that these have a tendency to pull the hair, causing the hair to spilt easier. She said to use cloth type hair ties are gentler on the hair.

When my hair was longer I used to toss my hair into a pretty messy bun to hit the road and run. I’ve since cut my hair into a chin length bob, but still don’t want hair flying in my face as I pound the pavement.

I discovered sweaty bands at the running store. They are a great no slip band that keeps hair off of my face while I sweat. The best thing is that they are so pretty I can wear them on days I don’t feel like doing my hair. And…they are washable! You can find them at sweatybands.com

This great invention has been around for some 5 years and shouldn’t be solely attributed to the brand you promote.

I found my savior in Malaysia and have been happily using it for a whole year until it got lost.

It’s very nice, works great with thick hair and definitely leaves no dents. It looks nice worn on wrist.

I’m not really bothered by ponytail dent, but, my hair has absolutely no hold to it, so I don’t think the dent sticks around very long.

Foldover elastic works just as well, is much cuter & quite inexpensive if you purchase it wholesale & tie it for yourself. You can get any color/pattern you want to match your wardrobe/personal style.

I’ve found that the fold over elastic leaves the dent in my hair–not quite as quickly as regular ones, but still a big dent. They also lose their elasticity after a couple of weeks of daily use. I’m going to order some of these for me and my daughter. I showed them to her and she said they were really cute–she’s 14 and has super thick hair that is like braiding sausages when I braid it so I’m hoping they’ll work for her.

What I want to ask you is do you have any knowlege of the Vitamin H Biotin which is supposed to thicken hair and prevent hair from falling out. The contra-indications are that it can cause water retention. What is your experience of people taking this medication which is easily available over the Pharmacy counter ?

I use a clau clip to put my hair up in a bun when I exercise and it works well. The one I use has a flat base and silicone inside the clips to stop it from slipping xx

It goes away when i have a shower and comes back after i blow dry my hair. After i blow dry my hair, i put my hair in a bun with nothing to hold it in place and wear a tube cap for hair (it’s made from cotton)but it still seems to came back. Do you know why that happened? Do you have any advice?

Buy a small water bottle. Mist your hair in the creased area, making sure to get underneath as well. Do not over saturate. Medium heat from a hair dryer and a round brush or flat brush with tension will remove the line without having to redo your entire hair.
