Growing up with oily skin, I steered clear of oil-based products for years. Then something switched.
Everyone started talking about oils and how good they were for your skin. How oils actually worked with your skin to calm it, and regulate oil production. I still was dubious but had to give it a try. I was dying to know what the fuss was about!
My first foray into oils was with rosehip oil as a night time moisturiser. I was too scared to try it in the day in case my shiny face got out of control. Within a week I was hooked. You only need to use a couple of drops and massage it into cleansed skin and you’ll wake up glowing. I use Trilogy Rosehip Oil Antioxidant+.
You can take that massage one step further and really boost your skincare with an oil. Nichola Joss, facialist to the stars, recommends massage to all her clients and you can do it at home. I use Sanctuary Spa Therapist’s Secret Facial Oil and Nichola’s suggested massage tips are in the box. I don’t do this everyday but I wish I remembered to.
I also use an oil for cleansing my skin. I do a double cleanse, first with Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil, then I use Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel. The key to oil cleaners is to use them on dry skin and gently massage to emulsify the oil.
Oils aren’t only good for your face. Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse is my multi use dry oil. I use this on my body and my hair. I always pack this when travelling as it’s such a useful product.

I really enjoyed this post as I am a fan of oils too! I’ve heard a lot about Shu but am yet to try that range. I’ve been using Okoii products for some months now (I’ve reviewed them on my blog a few times) and love them! My combo to oily skin is now “normal” – can’t advocate for use of oils enough! 🙂

Thanks Sarah, off to read your reviews now! I can’t believe I was so scared of using oils when they are so good for your skin

Last year I started using Neroli Oil made by Grateful Garden who has a booth at our local Farmer’s Market here in Joshua Tree, California. I absolutely love it. Not only does it moisturize my skin, it also evens out my complexion. And here in the desert, those are important.

I love finding natural beauty products at local markets. That one sounds great Patricia!

I won the Josie Maran Argan Oil set in a contest – it’s an oil based cleanser and oil moisturizer (I guess you could call it that) and also foundation and lip/cheek stick. I was so skeptical before trying it. I couldn’t imagine using oil on my face but I have fallen in love with it. I get so many wonderful comments about my skin and about how much younger I look. I don’t really break out anymore except for the required one pimple during my cycle. I can’t recommend this product enough.

That’s great Cindy! It’s funny how nervous we are about putting oil on our skin but my skin has never looked better too. Will have to try those products x

Right now my fave oil is avocado oil. I swallow one spoonful of the oil every day, and I also mix one or two drops in my night cream. I have oily skin, too, but the avocado oil really made a positive difference for my skin! 🙂
Hair Romance says
That’s a great way of making your own oil Conni. I love avocados, I could eat at last one every day!

I recently tried the Pai Rosehip oil, it’s looking good so far! Can’t wait to do a full review.

Sounds great! Rosehip oil is such a good product x

I have some rosehip oil here. I got a sample pack in a BellaBox. And I wasn’t really sure what on earth I was supposed to do with it. Now I know. I’ll give it a try tonight. It’s not the same brand, but it was a facial thing. I always here “Oil Free” when talking make ups/cleansers etc. So I wondered why suddenly oils were becoming popular.
I have really, really dry skin (but oh-so sensitive) so this works for me.
Hair Romance says
Rosehip oil is great for sensitive skin Melissa! Give it a try tonight. You’ll only need to use 2-3 drops x

I use straight sweet almond oil to clean my skin and it’s never felt so good. I frequently get told I look 7 years younger than I am! I do a preliminary scrub with bicarb soda, then wash with warm water, dry my hands and face, apply the oil, massaging it in, leave it for a few mins while I wash, then hold a steaming face washer to my face two or 3 times to open up the pores, then gently wipe the excess away (leaving enough to feel moisturised… don’t wipe it all completely off.. just so there are no “greasy” areas) I haven’t used a commercial wash or mosturiser in MONTHS and best of all.. the whole routine costs no more than $10 for a supply that lasts at least 1-2 months depending on how much you buy! I’ll never go back!

Thanks for the tips Michaela! Sounds like a great system and I’ll have to try some sweet almond oil x

It always amuses me how many skincare products shout about being oil-free when there’s so much evidence to support using oils in skincare. I don’t use straight oils very often, but I like to make sure my moisturiser, hand cream, etc. have some good oils in them.
As an aside, it really annoys me when products (especially haircare) claim to be “100% x oil” or “pure x oil” when they have a couple of drops in a silicone base. Any affordable suggestions for nice potent hair oils?
Hair Romance says
Me too Rachel! Pure oil products are extremely expensive (esp argan oil) so they are blended to make a more commercial product. Try the Nuxe oil for your hair or coconut oil is great too x
Rachel says
Where do you buy the Nuxe oil? I can’t remember ever seeing the brand in stores. I’m liking the price though, for a decent multi-tasker.
Hair Romance says
It’s available in selected chemists (Terry White & others) and online at Adore Beauty
