Moroccanoil corners the market on curls

July 19, 2011 By Hair Romance 43 Comments

I have been a fan of Moroccanoil since the beginning of this year. I love how it smooths my dry, frizzy hair and cuts drying time in half. Moroccanoil have recently expanded their range of products and have curly girls in their sights.

Intense Curl Cream is formulated with anti-oxidants to enhance your natural curl and shine. I like the pump bottle and creamy texture. No crispy curls with this product, it’s very hydrating though I found it to have only medium hold in my hair.

Moroccanoil Curl Control Cream is an intensive conditioning cream for curls and wavy hair. It creates hold while still allowing for movement in the hair. I like the soft fragrance and long lasting finish in my hair. It helps my fragile curls to firm and there’s no crunch in your curls with this product either.

Tips for creating fabulous curls

The trick with creating great curls is to be careful with them when they are wet. I never towel dry, just flip my head over and gently squeeze the water out with my hand, using the towel just to press water from the ends of my hair.

Apply curl products when your hair is still quite wet and a little goes a long way. You can always apply more product later but once curls are crispy it’s difficult to make them soft again.

I almost always use a diffuser to dry my curls (unless I have half a day to sit at home waiting for them to dry!). Diffusers are your curl’s best friend, but only dry your hair about 80% dry. This will help stop frizz from overheating.

I have used Moroccanoil Light oil and Curl Control Cream to create these curls. Maybe it was the weather but I felt I still had a bit of frizz. I had to run some Frizzy Logic through to smooth the ends. This shot was taken in the afternoon without any product touch ups.

Do you have curly hair? What are your tips for great curls? What’s your favourite curl product?

I have straight hair that has been permed. Is Moroccanoil curl control cream good to use on permed hair?

Hi Pam, yes this would work on permed hair. If you have fine hair you’ll only need to use a small amount x

I think I’ve ready all the blogs, but didn’t see anyone mention permed hair. How does the Morrocanoil work on permed hair?? Now that March is upon us, I need something that allows my hair to blow in the wind with a more natural look, not a permed look. My daughter swears by this product, but she has natural curls. Does anyone have any insight on this?

Good question Linda and hopefully someone will have some advice here. When my hair was permed I didn’t need to use a lot of product as my curls were very uniform. Borrow some from your daughter and give it a try it in your hair and see how it goes. Good luck x

I have pretty coarse, thick, ringlet type curls, and I too like the Aveda Be Curly products. Also, the last thing I do in the shower is turn the water all the way to cold and stick just my head under the tap so that my hair gets a final super cold rinse. I feel like it makes my hair smoother. Anyway, great blog and great hair! Thanks!!

Thanks Rose, I think that cold rinse works but I always forget to do it. Must try Aveda products.

    Hi,
Thanks for the curly hair tips! I have hair very similar to yours in curl and length so I was excited to see what you use. I’ve never used moroccan oil but I’d like to give it a try – I’m prone to getting oily hair so the thought of adding more oil was not appealing until I saw your photos.
I currently just apply a dollop of Bonacure Sealed Ends (and occasionally a little Osis Curl Me Soft) to my wet hair by scrunching it in from tip to root. It curls and dries in the car on the way to work with the occasional scrunch. I don’t get as much volume at the roots as you so I’m going to have to pull out my diffuser!
Any curly cutting advice would be appreciated, its always a battle!
    Thanks again

Thanks Michaela! Sounds like you’ve got a pretty good curl routine already. I love my diffuser, it makes such a difference to my curls. Especially if you’re in a hurry to get ready!

I don’t towel dry, just gently squeeze water. I use Moroccanoil Light and some Aveda Phomollient mousse stuff, occasionally. I love Redken Wool Shake, Batiste Nude and O&M Frizzy Logic. I’ve tried the Moroccanoil curl cream and hated it. Just gave me crispy, oily hair. I tried it in wet, damp, nearly dry hair. Everything I could think of, in fact.

Must get my hands on the Evo hairspray!

I have been using WEN for over a year and I love what it does for my curly hair. I use it in the shower to clense and then as leave in conditioner. Then I use a pea sized amount of their styling cream and voila!

I used to use Moroccanoil, but found here in Canada it got a little pricey and wasn’t as easy to find. My new hair dressed, who is absolutely amazing, recently introduced me to Be Curly by Aveda. Not only does it do amazing things to my hair, but it’s also all natural. Not many products actually work with my hair, but Be Curly has been one of my favourites. It doesn’t leave it crunchy, it’s not as sticky as TIKI’s Cat Walk, and I’ve found the bottle lasts me a long time. Even with the ridiculous amount of hair that I have.

When my hair was long the weight of it drags down my curls. Layers to take out the bulk could bring back your curls and you can still keep the length

I tried the marrocan oil a while back and itmade my hair really greasy and caused my scalp to itch. We have a very similar curl but mine hair is dark. I stumbled on the Deva products and have spent a small fortune on having them delivered from America (bcz I canot find them ANYWHERE else!). But the Deva curly girl products do wonders for my hair.

The cleanser (or shampoo) does not lather at all so it does not cause frizz. I wash my hair upside down and appluy conditioner that way too as it gives volume at the top of my head. I use a spprita also by Deva.

However, it is costing me a lot! I am looking to try something else and I think I have to try the products you blog about. I've tried just about everything else on the aussie market!

Have you heard of Deva? Do you know if it can be purchased in Australia?

    Love your blog.

My hair is outrageously curly, thin, fairly long, and I have a lot of it. Every product I've ever tried for curly hair has failed me. If I don't do anything to it, however, I have more frizz and volume than was acceptable in even the '80s.

But I've found the miracle cure. Garnier Fructise in Body Boost shampoo and conditioner. A t-shirt and paper towels. St. Ives lotion in the winter.

I use the shampoo as directed, then put the conditioner in. I bring a hair tie into the shower with me, so I can put my hair (with the conditioner in it) into a bun while I soap and shave. After at least 5 minutes, I take the bun out and rinse with cold water. Once I am out of the shower, I DO NOT use a towel, but take a cotton t-shirt instead. I flip my hair over and scrunch. Then I take 3 paper towels and scrunch with that. I flip my hair back over, diffuse or airdry, and voila! Perfect curls.

In the winter, before I use my t-shirt and paper towels, I grab a squirt of St. Ive's collagen elastin lotion (yes, body lotion), and work through my wet hair avoiding the roots. Then I continue with my drying ritual. I live in KS, which is extremely humid during the summer and fairly dry during the winter. I believe this is why I have to use lotion in the winter, to put moisture and "fake humidity" back in my hair.

I never straighten my hair any more because I can control my curls and have ringlets all of the time. Also, I find that letting it go curly after a straightening makes my hair crispy and dry (and therefor, less curly!) Curly hair is so easy to make dressy or casual, so I stick with the natural. I hope this works for someone! It's taken me the last ten years to figure all of this out!

Wouldya look at those curls!! Tell me , did you bang a diffuser onto your Parlux? If so which one fits? I don't think I could ever get my kinks to properly go to curls, they can't even properly do curls!! But I also haven't worked with a diffuser in years!!

Love your curls! I'm a curly girl too! I've been no-poo for about a year now and my curls are way shinier, curlier, and softer than they ever were with products. Just lots of conditioner and a bit of silicone-free spray gel.

Your hair does look fantastic! I know you blow dry (viva Parlux!) to make styling go a little "smoother," (*ahem*, no pun intended…), but can I request some more curly styles on here? If for no other reason than to look at your gorgeous curls 🙂

Where can I buy this in Sydney? I've always had frizzy/curly hair that I have to keep long enough to put in a ponytail on those 'bad hair days' when I don't have time to straighten. Love your blog.

@Lorilee – we always want what we don't have! Love your straight hair, many hairs are burnt and lost in the quest for straight hair 😉

@Nadine – Thanks you! But like I said, love your straight hair! Think of the time you save straightening it each day xx

I love Moroccan oil [although, I've never heard of this exact brand! I wonder where I can find it over here…]. And THANK YOU for instructing us curly haired chicks to NEVER touch our hair when wet. So many of my friends have not caught on to that, no matter how often I tell them… I'm going to have to direct them to you. :]

I've yet to use the Moraccanoil brand but I also love anything with argan oil in it. I too have a curly head of hair close to yours just much thinner. My go-to product for years has been the TIGI Catwalk Curls Rock Amplifier. It does leave a little crunch for me but a once over scrunch of my whole head and it's gone leaving frizz free locks.

Another product that I recently tried is curlformers, they can give you wide curls or tight ringlets depending on which you purchase. I recently posted a picture on my Flickr with my results, I love them!

I just recently came across your blog and love it! Thanks for sharing all your tips & insights. 🙂
