My quick everyday curly hair updo

November 11, 2014 By Hair Romance 25 Comments

For those days when your curls are super crazy and driving you nuts, try this quick and easy updo.

You know the days, when your hair looks a bit like this.

Hair Romance - my crazy curly hair and a quick updo to tame the mane

Yes, that’s my hair.

I know some of you might think my hair looks alright, and I don’t completely disagree. I love big hair but sometimes it just drives me crazy.

On hot days, or when I need to work, brushing my hair back constantly is annoying.

I like to quickly put it all back and up off my neck. Now I know this style isn’t the prettiest and neatest hairstyle tutorial I’ve ever done but let’s be real. This is my hair as I wear it. I haven’t blowdried it first. I haven’t even washed it.

It’s frizzy and messy but this updo tidies all that crazy hair away in less than two minutes.

That’s a winner to me, especially when I’ve slept in and need to rush out the door in a hurry.

What you need:

  • Bobby pins
  • 2 small clear hair elastics

Step-by-step:

  1. Make a deep side part, or you can do a centre part if you prefer.
  2. Take a good section of hair at your part and split it into two. Twist the front section over the back.
  3. Add some hair from your hairline to the back section and twist it up and over the top.
  4. Continue twisting your hair back, following your hairline to your ear. Use a bobby pin to secure the twist in place.
  5. Now split the rest of your hair into two equal sections.
  6. Braid each side and secure the ends with small, clear hair elastics.
  7. Fold the braids into a low updo, making sure to tuck the ends of your hair underneath. My hair is just long enough to fold the ends of the braids under and put one braid over the other. Pin the style in place with bobby pins.

Styling tips

Make this style your own!

  • If your hair is shorter, just twist your hair back into a bun instead of creating the two braids.
  • If your hair is longer than mine, you can curve your braids around into a round bun, or even a figure-8 shaped bun.

To reduce frizz, you can apply an oil or serum to your hair before you begin.

Now I reckon this is my least Pinterest-worthy hairstyle, but it’s one I wear a lot with my messy curls.

What’s your go-to hairstyle that’s more function over form?

Love this hairstyle but I think I’m doing the twist part wrong, it just looks like a regular twist rather than a french-braidy-twist-thing. Help?

Thanks Sarah! The texture in my hair probably makes the twist more pronounced. I also add in more hair as I twist, creating a sort of two strand rope braid. You can also pull the twist apart to emphasise the braid look. Good luck and hope this helps xx

Absolutely adore all of your curly hair tutorials, it’s helping me get through this harsh scottish weather and making me proud of my curls instead of just straightening them constantly!

    Thank you 🙂

My hair is very similar to yours….just bigger! I wish I could do something with it! (no patience left). From somebody who’s got coconut oil on her hair as hair mask at the weekends!

oh Joanna, I know the feeling. Coconut oil is fab for your hair. Practise one or two styles so that you can do them quickly in your hair, then start building from there. Good luck xx

i know what you mean about curly hair being annoying sometimes. I’ve been hiding my curly hair all my life in updos because it was too much hassle. i made a post on my blog recently with my hair down and curly and people commented on how much they wanted curly hair too. no you really don’t.

your tutorial looks easy to follow and the style is so cute, I’m defiantly going to try it!

Hi love this style so pretty. What I am wondering is I have curly hair and have been thinking of having it layered but does it improve your curls? And is layered hair harder to style and do up-do’s etcetera. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Krys, I have long layers and prefer my hair with some layers. It depends on your type of curl really. Layers can sometimes fall out of updos but nothing a pin or hairspray can’t fix 😉

Tried it this morning: it was perfect for my “I didn’t get enough sleep so I don’t feel like washing my hair” kind of day 😉
I can send you pictures. It was easy pinning my hair and mine are much longer: my hair goes down to the middle of my back and it’s curly kinda like yours.

I tried this out today and I love it! My only comment is that the instructions for pinning the braids is a little unclear so that part took me longer to do. (My hair is a bit longer than yours.)

Yay! So glad you tried it Jessica! I’ll try and fix the instructions. My hair just folded the ends under and pinned them in place. On longer hair did you have to wind them around each other? x

Love this style! I do something similar for work most days (inspired by your styles for wet hair) and it’s perfect for keeping my hair looking respectable for a change! I get many lovely comments which is nice! Many thanks for all your great styles – you’ve inspired me to get back to doing more than just a pony tail for my hair – Thank you! 🙂
