NYFW Hair Trend: Braids

February 20, 2013 By Hair Romance 12 Comments

Just when you thought you couldn’t wear braids a different way, along comes New York Fashion Week with some new hair inspiration.

Braids were a massive trend across the runways and here are Hair Romance’s pick of the latest braid trends from NYFW.

Alice + Olivia

This gorgeous ring braid at Alice + Olivia is teased out to sit like a headband over a neat center part.

Best for long hair, braid two low pigtails and twist them around over your head. Use bobby pins to keep in place and don’t forget to stretch out your braid to recreate this texture.

Christian Siriano

Amazing what you can do with pigtails! This chic updo at Christian Siriano is formed by crossing two fishtail braided pigtails. Find my fishtail braid tutorial here.

Alexandre Herchcovitch

A braided twist on the deep side part at Alexandre Herchcovitch uses a Dutch lace braid to keep the hair slicked back on one side. Find my lace braid tutorial here, and reverse it to recreate this Dutch braid.

Badgley Mischka

I love this quiff twist on this backwards braided upstyle at Badgley Mischka. French braid from the nape of your neck to your crown. Then backcomb your hair and twist into a sideways quiff.

Jen Kao

A diagonal twist on a braided chignon at Jen Kao. Make two uneven pigtails and braid them. Twist them diagonally together and pin them flat to the back of your head. The final look included a tulle cover, and this style lends itself to jeweled accessories for an evening look.

Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti

This fishtail braided upstyle at Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti is like a messier version of the hair at Christian Siriano. It’s two fishtail braids twisted together but the emphasis is on the texture of the hair. Stretch out your fishtail braids before curving them up and pinning in place.

Veronica Beard

This deconstructed fishtail braid was inspired by the cowgirl inspiration behind the Veronica Beard collection. Volume and texture are key to this messy braid, so load up on sea salt spray and volumiser.

Backstage styling tip? Hair Director Janelle Chaplin for O&M used cable ties to secure the hair! She says they’re less damaging than hair elastics.

So it seems fishtails are the braid of the season. Which is your favorite braided hairstyle from NYFW?

Oh, the makeup at Alice + Olivia is gorgeous. That first model with the beautiful gold eyes and perfect skin looks amazing. As far braids go, I’d have to say the quif-braid and the texture at Alberta Ferretti are my favourites!

I LOVE the hair at Alice + Olivia, and I’m a bit partial to Badgley Mischka as well – sigh, I miss having long hair.
