NYFW Runway to Reality – alice + olivia – How to get the look

September 21, 2011 By Hair Romance 6 Comments

alice + olivia’s spring showing at NYFW looked like a secret garden landscape. Love the bright 1960s beach colours mixed with other more subtle pieces, like a gold beaded dress with a nod to the 1920s.

There were two hair looks for the collection, to reference the two sides to the alice + olivia spring range and Thomas Dunkin, Lead stylist for Sebastian Professional shares how to get the look.

alice + olivia – the side-sweep hairstyle

Look 1 – the side-sweep

  1. On damp hair, apply Potion 9 from root to tip. Spritz Volupt Spray on entire head, focusing at the roots, and blow-dry with a large round brush?
  2. Set hair in large velcro rollers and clip to cool?
  3. Once cool, remove rollers and run fingers through the curls to loosen them up?
  4. Apply a liberal amount of Potion 9 to separate the hair. Create a loose side part, putting into place with fingers and pulling hair down and forward, tuck and secure into a section at the back?
  5. Take random 3 inch sections and twist until happy with a placement that softens the face and gives added volume?
  6. Finish the look with Re-Shaper hairspray for long-lasting hold??

Look 2 – the high bun

  1. On damp hair, spray entire head with Potion 9 Lite for lightweight hold and manageable styling, then blow-dry completely with a round brush?
  2. Once the hair is completely dry, gather hair into a high, tight ponytail at the crown. To keep this look smooth and sleek, comb back from the hairline to the base of the ponytail while spraying Shaper Fierce for maximum hold?
  3. Secure ponytail and carefully wrap around a donut hair piece, keeping hair very tight with your hands as you go. Secure pieces to the donut with fine pins as you wrap the entire length of the ponytail into a precise and polished bun?
  4. Finally, spritz the hair with Re-Shaper hairspray for a look that lasts

I love both these looks and think they are easy styles to steal. In fact, the side sweep looks a lot like my Day 1 of my 30 Hairstyles in 30 Days challenge. I’m often asked if you can do my hairstyles with longer or shorter hair, which you definitely can and maybe need to vary the style accordingly. I think this side sweep hairstyle shows a great way to do the Twist & Pin with long hair.

Day 1 of the 30 Hairstyles in 30 Days – Twist & Pin to the side

The high bun is a hairstyle classic. Depending on how you style it it can be princess-like or beachy cool. Here’s my recent take on the high bun.

My version of the high bun – my go-to holiday hair

On holiday, my go-to hairstyle is the high bun and I wore my hair this way to my friends’ wedding in Greece. Orange is always one of my favourite colours and my orange obsession is right on trend at the moment. I’m wearing Marvela Elle Orange nailpolish, ring from H&M, Topshop dress and my sunglasses are vintage.

Which of these two looks do your prefer? Will you be taking these runway hairstyles into reality? Do you have a go-to hairstyle on holidays? And how happy are you that orange is everywhere?

@The Procrastinator – you need to try the sock bun that Melody is talking about. Or you can buy hair padding too. That way your get the bun shape no matter how long or thin your hair is. It's super easy to do.

Twist & Pin to the side? It's a nice hairstyle. The 3rd photo where the model is wearing an head bond looks elegant. Good for summer.

I like the high bun more. I feel the side sweep style is a little bit too bridal looking for everyday wear.

    Love the orange ring!

Ooh I'm loving your high bun! I can never get mine like that without curling my hair first. Stupid stick-straight hair. =P!
