Want to try a fringe / bangs but without the commitment? Fake it with your ponytail, as seen at the Prada Spring/Summer 13 show.
The runway hair inspiration – Prada S/S 13
For the Prada show, hair director Guido Palau created a high French twist style, with the pontytail end coming forward to create a faux fringe. I liked this look, but wasn’t sure I could wear this style of fringe.
Then last week I went to RAW Salon for a trends presentation with the delightful Anthony Nader on the key looks from fashion weeks. We both loved the Dolce & Gabbana scarves and Anthony demonstrated the Prada-inspired faux fringe hairstyle on a model.
And I thought, I could do that! So I went home straight away and tried the style with a reverse braid, which is Day 13 of my 30 Hairstyles in 30 Days.
The faux fringe in my hair
Anthony’s advice was to adjust the length of the fringe to suit your face and the look you prefer. A shorter fringe is a bit sporty, or more pixie. If your hair is long you can create a side sweeping fringe. If your hair is long, you can twist it and pin it on top of your head so that the right amount it left for your fringe/bangs. Make sure you keep the ends of your hair even, then will create a more realistic look.
Faux fringe / bangs tutorial – inspired by Prada and Dolce & Gabbana SS 13
Step-by-step
- Brush all your hair back into a ponytail. If you want to add more volume, you can put some mousse through your hair and rough dry with your hairdryer.
- Twist the ponytail around and up into a French twist. Start the twist higher for a more modern feel.
- Secure the twist with bobby pins, then work out where you want your new fringe / bangs to sit. If your hair is long you can twist it tighter, fold it back and pin it on top of your head.
- Bring the ends of your hair to sit on your forehead as a fringe / bangs. Adjust so the ends of your hair sit together to give the fringe more weight, and a more natural feel.
- Tie a scarf around to finish the look.
Would you ever fake it with your fringe?
It is beautiful! I use you tutorial in my site! :*
Thank you!
hello! your website is so great….! I love it and hairstyles are so easy to do! I have just a question about bobby pins… How can I put them in my hair correctly, because my hair falls everytime when Iput some bobby pins…! Thank you!
HI Zoe, I find professional quality pins make a huge difference. You can find more bobby pin tips here, and there is a video tutorial for bobby pins here. Hope this helps x
I’ve done this before and I love the look too (I posted a link to a pic in my FB album when I did this back in February)! I also have a faux bang that I wear when I straighten my hair and want to wear it down! It’s great to be able to get the look without making the long-term commitment!!

Actually, this is a better shot. I did it with a French twist and a hair fork. There are more pics of it in the album.

Love it Shelli! I couldn’t even tell it was a faux fringe
Awwww, thank you so much Christina!!
🙂
ooh I love this. I need to try. I love a front fringe but it’s too hot for me in summer usually.
The team at Raw are amazeballs!
Thanks Megan! Fringes are hard to care for in summer too so this will be my version. Anthony & the RAW team are fab x
I love this idea – super clever! My hair’s probably too thick to pull this off, but I love the diversity you’ve made with this do. The back looks lovely as well.
Thanks Jessica x
I am loving the faux fringe, might give that a go as i really want to try out a fringe & i’m getting my hair cut this week!! As always, brilliant tips, thanks, love Posie
Thanks! Hope it helps you decide if you want a fringe x
Wow what a great idea!
Thanks Meleny x
This is a great idea! I’ve been thinking about adding bangs, now I can “try them on” without cutting.
Thanks Drew. Less risk than cutting bangs, and no awkward grow out phase if you decide you don’t like them too!
This is such a cool idea! I can’t wait to try it!
Thanks Kimberley, you shoudl try it. It’s really easy and my friend thought I’d really had a fringe cut x
I love the faux fringe it really suits you!!
Thanks! And it’s much easier to look after than a real fringe too x
