This is another of my favourite twist and pin updos. It’s deceptively simple to do and looks both sweet and stylish.
Like the French roll twist and pin, this is a great hairstyle for when you are don’t have time to dry your hair. You can easily do this style in wet hair and it will dry with a nice wave in the ends. You can even cheat by just blowdrying the top of your hair to keep it smooth. This hairstyle will hide the rest away in these sweet twists on the nape of the neck. This updo is also perfect for a second (or third!) day blowdry.
Hair product tips
- Starting with wet hair? Run some Moroccan Oil through your hair from midlenths to your ends.
- If your hair is a little dry you may want to use a serum to smooth down any flyaways.
- A spritz of hairspray will make it last all day.
Step by step
- Part your hair on the side.
- Take a small section of hair at the left behind your ear and twist and pin on your neckline.
- Do the same twist and pin behind your right ear and pin on your neckline.
- Then separate the rest of your hair into equal sections and repeat, twisting into little buns and pinning on the nape of your neck.
Through many attempts I found that if you do the left and right first, it’s easier to keep a straight line. If you start at one side you tend to go up and it’s hard to keep the sections even. This hairstyle looks best if you have hair all one length or long layers. It will be hard to style with short layers unless you use a lot of product.
As always I recommend using good hair pins in the same colour as your hair.

hello! what type of hair pins do you recommend? Thanks!
Hi ellie! I use these pins – https://www.hairromance.com/2012/03/which-hair-pins-do-i-use.html and here’s a tip for using bobby pins too – Xx
Hey Christina,
I have a question regarding hair color. My hair appears to be about
the same shade as yours… highlights included lol. But my question is
about going dark. What would you recommend? I love the shade of
Nikki Reeds hair, but I’m not sure if that’s too dark with my fair skin tone.
I love your tutorials and am enjoying playing around with your site and
especially your updos/braids.
Thanks

Nikki Reed has great hair, you could definitely do that multi-tonal brown like her. The thing now with hair, is that you can have any colour you want, but you just need to change your makeup and clothes to suit. It’s easier if you keep within the same colour temperature range. I mean, if you like cool blonde colours, you’ll also suit cool browns. If you prefer warm gold blondes, you’ll prefer redder browns. It’s all about how much effort you want to put into changing your look.
I tried this style and loved it but found it easier with goody spin pin minis!!! It is a lot less tricky.
Thanks Lorna! Can you believe I can’t get spin pins in Australia? It’s a travesty. I need to make a trip to the US just to stock up 😉
I have a little shorter than shoulder length hair. I would love to try this. What would be some advice? Thanks!!!
Hi Nina, you could still try it, maybe try folding you hair more than twisting it, as you don’t have as much hair to pin up. Have lots of pins ready & give it a try! Thanks xx
Great hairstyle! I’ve got shoulder-length hair and just gave it a quick try – it came out looking great with very little effort. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for trying it!
I am growing my curly & quite unruley hair right now and I believe it is just "straight" long enough to do this great little do! I love it! Thank you!!
@Aimee Thank you, my top is from Bracewell but I've had it for a while.
@Emma – YES! Would love to see a photo of your hair! Please send it to thehair[at]hairromance[dot]com
I would love to see photos of anyone who has tried my styles xxx
my hair is extremely long…the small of my back to be exact. i tried plaiting my hair and then doing this and it turned out amazing. id be happy to share a picture if anyone wants to see!
so great! I'm trying this tomorrow!
I love your gray top. Can I ask where you got it?
I adore this idea so much!! I am going to try it right now. My hair is thick, but not insanely long at the moment so I am hoping for great results.
I tried this, but my hair is so thick that my little twisted buns were way to big! 🙂 I'm going to try it again with more twists, and maybe with wet hair. thanks!
Thanks Hayley – she looks adorable! xxx
Thanks for this idea! I did my daughter's hair this way and blogged about it if you are interested! Thanks again.

Such a cute hair idea! I tried it today and love how it turned out.
please post a video on how to do this :). it looks so cute but i have no idea how to do it.
I love this super cute, and not as boring as a plain bun!
Hi Annette – so pleased you tried this, it's really quick to do once you get the hang of it. Love your site xx
Thanks Tamuna – your blog is lovely xx
Anon –
Definitely give this a go!
Hi, I love this as it looks so cute but my hair is only as long as the shortest layer shown here. Would I still be able to do this style? Thanks 🙂 x
I just featured this tutorial on my blog, please stop by and have a look 🙂

A Journey to Style
Hey there!
I just tried this out after finding you over at Iblogbeauty and I'll give you some background…
I'm terrible at hair! I have no idea what to do with my locks, but I tried this and it looks REALLY cute, so I'm going to incorporate it into my minimal repertoire!
I also like the look of the scarf one, really cute!
Adding you as a link on my blogroll xo
Hi Rachel
It can be tricky but once you get the hang of it it's super easy.
You almost need to weave the pin through the twist and your hair underneath to keep it in place. Try weaving the pin through and see how you go.
Good luck
Christina @ Hair Romance xx
Omg I love your site! I recently cut 6 1/2 inches off! However, I can still do this style but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to exactly to pin the curls. I've never tried it before and am having a hard time.
Thanks!
Thanks Renee, so sweet xx
Thanks suddathjr, I also do side twists too, it's so versatile. Love that you tried other versions of this xx
i tried this last night but set the twists over to one side. then, this morning i tried it all in the back. I have short, fine hair, so it works best with just three twists. So fun and very cute!
Since i liked this post so much, i have featured it here… http://babygeisler.blogspot.com/2011/03/what-i-like-fridays.html
i hope you are flattered, rather than annoyed. but if there are issues for whatever reason, please please let me know so that i can take it down 🙂
thank you and happy weekend
Renee
Thanks Amanda xx
I am new to your blog and you have such cute hair ideas! I'm actually posting some of your how-to's tomorrow morning:) I can't wait to try them out.
The Cheeky Cafe
Thanks Kelly! I'm following you too now x
I'm so glad you commented on my blog, I got to find yours! It's brilliant.

Brilliant! I'm so pleased you tried it!

I have this in my hair right now after I read it last night. It looks amazing! I think it's my new go to hair style. It took about 20 bobby pins since my hair is so long and curly, but it's totally worth it!
It could be a bit tricky if your hair is super long. A couple of tips –
– You could use hair bands to create the sections on your hairline first then twist & pin on top of them.
– If your hair is still too long, you could plait the sections and then pin them. I think this would look GORGEOUS and would love to see a pic if you try this. My hair isn't long enough for that (yet…)
– Or you could try two rows of twist and pins
Good luck xx
Wow I love the look of this, wonder if it would work on my insanely long/thick hair, I might have to give it a go sometime 🙂
