This drink is the perfect way to start your day. You’ll be surprised at the incredible beauty benefits of drinking lemon water.
As part of my Beauty-Full Food series, I thought I’d share something simple that I do every day. I drink warm lemon water while I’m going about my morning routine.
It’s something my grandma always used to do but I kind of forgot about until last year. Now it’s a daily habit and helps to start my day right.
One of the major reasons I started drinking lemon water again was because I’ve been experiencing some health problems. I have an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s which has caused a range of symptoms including hypothyroidism. I am on a treatment program with my doctor but I was still feeling so tired and suffering from hormone imbalances.
After seeing a naturopath I was advised to be really careful about maintaining my blood sugar levels. Did you know blood sugar spikes can affect your hormones? So starting my day with a coffee on an empty stomach is one of the worst things I can do.
I had to switch out my morning coffee for something better and lemon water is the perfect solution. I’ve felt so much better since the switch and noticed so many other health and beauty benefits of drinking lemon water.
How to make lemon water
This is easiest how to of all time. Just squeeze some lemon juice (about 1/4 of a small lemon) into a cup, add a slice of lemon and top with warm-hot water.
I add in boiling water from my kettle and a little cold water to get it to the right temperature for me to drink straight away.
The beauty benefits of drinking lemon water
There are so many reasons to drink lemon water in the mornings, such as:
- Boosts hydration
If you hate drinking water, adding lemon makes it easier to drink. You can book your hydration in the morning with warm lemon water and then add a slice to a water bottle to drink during the day. - Aids digestion
Lemon water cleanses your body and enhances your enzyme functions and helps to detoxify your digestive tract. - Alkalises your body
Drinking lemon water regularly will reduce acidity in your body and reduce inflammation. - Brightens your skin
It works from the inside out to reduce not only blemishes but wrinkles because of the antioxidants in lemons. - Boosts your immune system
It’s a mage dose of vitamin C which helps boost your energy levels too. - Freshens your breath
It’s also supposed to help relieve toothaches and can fight throat infections too. - Helps you to lose weight
The pectin fibre in lemons can help reduce cravings. Plus maintaining your blood sugar levels prevents those energy crashes later in the day.
Even if you’re a die-hard coffee drinker, try switching your first cup of the day for a lemon water and see how you feel. The beauty benefits are worth it!
Do you drink lemon water? What’s your drink of choice in the morning?

Thanks Jade! x
Lucia says
Is there any difference in drinking it hot or cold? Do you have any experience?
Hair Romance says
I like a hot lemon in the morning, that’s just my personal preference. I have heard that drinking really cold water can be a shock to your system in the morning. During the day, if I’m having trouble drinking enough water, I add a couple of slices of lemon to a jog of water to make it easier to drink x
Me my best and I says
Errry morning!! Lately Ive started adding some fresh turmeric too in a tea strainer. Love the sunny golden colour it turns the water, makes me happy in the am! Hope the naturopath visits are paying off. My lady has done wonders for me with her suggestions x
Hair Romance says
Thanks lovely, naturopath was great and now seeing a Chinese medicine and acupuncturist. So good x
Kim says
I drink lemon water thru the day – I have read about hot lemon in the morning but can’t find why it is to be hot water?
Lemon (all citrus) can be hard on teeth enamel, so use a straw or a bottle with a lid to cut down on contact with teeth..
Hair Romance says
Hi Kim, I’m not 100% sure but I have heard that warm drinks are more easily absorbed by the body. The closer it is to our body temperature, the better it is. Good point on using a straw to help your teeth. I usually drink another glass of plain water after to rinse my teeth.
Tamara says
That good huh? I should try it then ??
Hair Romance says
Definitely! 😉 xx
Bumbling Panda says
Now I have to go buy lemons!
Hair Romance says
Do it! Or find a neighbour with a lemon tree 😉
Katie says
unfortunately drinking Lemon water like this painfully inflames my gums. Instead I use a quarter of a lemon, slice it and put in in a one liter water bottle and drink it throughout the day!
Hair Romance says
Oh no, that’s a shame Katie, but a great solution to drink it throughout the day.
Sonia from Sonia Styling says
I used to do this and felt fantastic for it. I need to get back into the habit again. Thanks for the timely reminder! x
Hair Romance says
Maybe try and get it ready the night before so you remember in the morning? I have to make my morning as automated as possible or I get into bad habits x
Smaggle says
I am in LOVE with lemon water! Have it almost every day!
Hair Romance says
Yay! It’s the best 🙂
Emily @ Have A Laugh On Me says
My sister swears by this – and I try to do it when I remember but often in my desperation to process the noise my child are making I reach for coffee!
Hannah says
I love having a hot lemon (that’s what I call them) first thing in the morning, and I’ve been doing it for about three or four years now. I find that whenever I skip a morning I feel sluggish. The lemon is just so refreshing and I can definitely feel the difference between when I have a hot lemon and when I don’t. I’m a caffeine addict, but a hot lemon definitely trumps coffee for my first cup of the day!
Hair Romance says
I call it a hot lemon too 🙂 I have a coffee a bit later in the morning after breakfast which is supposed to make it easier on your blood sugar levels.
