Top knots and headbands

April 12, 2012 By Hair Romance 20 Comments

Now that my hair is getting longer, the top knot is fast becoming my easy, go-to hairstyle for some very simple reasons.

Three reasons to love a top knot

  1. You can put your hair up straight out of the shower
  2. You can hide your dirty hair if you don’t have time to wash it
  3. You look taller

Top knot tutorial

For instructions on how to style a giant top knot see my hair tutorial hereΒ and the best bit is you don’t even need a lot of hair to do it!

Top knots and headbands

I have been wearing top knots so often I was starting to get bored so I have a few how-to ideas to top your top knot. The first top tip is to add a headband.

Headbands are an underrated hair accessory. In less than a second a messy hairdo becomes polished by adding a headband. The simple placement of a jewelled headband will make everyone think you’ve gone to a lot of effort when you haven’t even brushed your hair. It’s the quickest hairstyle fix I know.

Clockwise from top left: Headbands from Summerblossom, $2 shop, Peeptoe and DIY.

Why not try adding a headband to your top knot and see how it changes your look.

I love the headband with the top knot! I’m learning the value of headbands. They are so handy for helping maintain your hair (I have tons of little flyaways that I can’t ever seem to control!) and adding a new element to the hair do. Not only does it control my fly-aways but it makes and me and my hair look even cuter. You gotta love them! I’m so glad they are coming back!

Love Love Love a Top Knot!!!
My little girl rocks hers too and she’s 10.
The fun part: the tighter your pony is the more of a facelift you get.
    Gotta love multi-tasking!

There is just something about a top knot isn’t there? I feel dramatically more glamorous and chic when I wear one! My hair donut is my new best friend. x

I never thought to combine the Top Knot AND the hairband. Genius! Now I can keep those flyaways back even easier.

Gorgeous on you and so full!! Thanks for sharing the DIY donut link BTW- my original DIY effort is still going strong- works a treat πŸ˜‰

Have you got any tricks for stopping headbands sliding and slipping- they always move around so much on me!

Thanks Julie! I loved your DIY. I seem to have the opposite problem with headbands in that they are too tight. I must have a big head. I do find if you style your hair first, then the headband is more decorative than functional, it stays in place better. I’ll see if I can put together some more headband tips x

I love the top knot on you! Plus the addition of the headband=perfection. I only recently (within the past year) changed up my shampooing routine (I used to shampoo and blow dry my hair EVERYDAY! I was killing my hair!), so now I’m always looking for “2nd day” styles. This looks so cool…I am going to try it! Thanks for the inspiration πŸ™‚ <3

Hope you’re having a great week!
