I’ve got a new hairstyle tutorial for you that’s a twist on the fishtail braid.
This hairstyle is quicker to do than a regular fishtail and has a fun puffball finish. I’ve got the trick to getting this volume under my styling tips below.
My lovely friend Mona was visiting last week and only at the last moment did I get her in front of my camera to shoot this hairstyle tutorial. I only had a few minutes and we just made up this style as we went along.
Mona has really long hair but it’s also really fine. She says she can’t braid her hair but she nailed this style and was wearing it again today.
Check out my tutorial below and add this twisted fishtail into your weekly hair-drobe.
Twisted Fishtail – Side braid hairstyle tutorial
You’ll need:
- 4 hair elastics
- Bobby pins
- Volume styling powder
Step-by-step
- Gather your hair into a side ponytail. Secure it with an elastic.
- Cover your hair elastic. Take a small piece of hair and wrap it around your elastic and pin the ends in place with a bobby pin.
- Split your ponytail in two equal sections and start your fishtail braid. Fishtails seem more complicated than regular braids but they’re really easier. You only have two sections instead of thee and you just keep crossing small sections from one side to the other. Think of outside-in as you’re taking a pice of hair from the outside of one ponytail and adding it to the inside of the other ponytail.
- Continue your fishtail braid for 2-3 inches. Then secure with a small hair elastic that matches your hair colour.
- Fishtail braid the next section. Try and make it approx the same length as the first section. Secure it with an elastic.
- Repeat creating more fishtail braid sections until all your hair is included in the braid. On the final section, you can loop the ends of your hair through your elastic.
- Stretch out your braid to emphasise the shape of your twisted fishtail braid.
Styling Tips
- Remember with fishtail braids to keep crossing sections over from the outside-in. I find repeating (out loud or in my head) this helps me keep track of what I’m doing.
- Use small hair elastics so they don’t detract from the finished hairstyle.
- The trick to getting volume in braids, especially in fine hair, is volume styling powder. My fave is Schwarzkopf which I used in this tutorial. Sprinkle the powder lightly on your braid. Pat it gently so that it absorbs into your hair. Then stretch your hair out for mega volume.
Thanks for being my hair model Mona!
I’d love to see this style in your hair. If you try it, snap a photo and share it with me on Facebook or Instagram xx
This is my new favourite hairstyle! I have quite thick hair so it doesn’t look quite the same but it’s a great way of keeping it in all day without needing any fiddling with! It copes fine with wearing a hat as well. It’s quick and easy to do but people always comment on how nice my hair looks! Thank you!
Thanks Rebecca! This would be a fab style under a hat 🙂
