A new twist on the ponytail, this simple style will work in any hair length as long as you can make a ponytail.
Inspired by the hair at the Suboo show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia, this ponytail can be created with a few simple twists.
Backstage at Suboo I spoke to Robert Ham of Moroccanoil who came from New York to direct the hair. One of the inspirations for the look was the macramé jewelley and Robert designed a woven ponytail that mimicked the knotted rope.
My version of this look is simpler and works if you have layers in your hair (as long as they reach your ponytail). If you don’t have a lot of hair, a ponytail extension, like the models were wearing, will give you a fuller ponytail.
How to get the look
Step 1 – Clip away two sections of hair either side of your face.
Step 2 – Put the rest of your hair in a ponytail and secure with an elastic.
Step 3 – Separate the side section into three equal parts.
Step 4-5 – Starting with the lowest section, twist the hair up and wrap it around your ponytail. Secure the end with a bobby pin.
Step 6 – Repeat on the other side and continue twisting and pinning each section around your ponytail.
Step 7-8 – A tip for keeping the ends in place is to tease the end of each section and put the bobby pin on the end of the section of hair. Then wrap in around and pin it in place. Putting the pin on the end of you hair first makes it so much easier to do.
If your hair is long, keep wrapping your hair around the ponytail as seen at fashion week.
Backstage styling tip
Curl your hair slightly before wrapping it around the ponytail. This curl will stop any ends sticking out and will help hold your hair in place.
Will you try this twist on the ponytail? Love to see a photo if you try it.
I love this style! And thanks to your simple directions, I think even I can manage this soft, romantic look! 🙂 Much less severe than a traditional pony tail.
Thanks!
