For a long time I had a shameful secret. I wrote a hair blog but I couldn’t curl my hair with a styler.

Curling your hair with a ghd is one of the basic hair skills I should have known how to do but every time I tried, it was a disaster.

I have finally conquered that curl but along the way I learned there are so many ways you can style your hair with a ghd.

The best thing about the two beachy waves tutorials below is that you can’t get them wrong. Fact!

The messier the better.

That was one of the biggest issues I had when first learning how to curl my hair with a ghd. If I got the curl wrong, it only made it worse to try and re-curl the same section.

I would start trying to curl my hair before a night out and nail one side only to fail at the other side. Maybe that’s one of the reasons I learnt so many braids and updos? They were the only styles to hide my failed attempts at curling my hair.

Now I can proudly say I can curl my hair with my ghd but these other looks have become my favourite quick hairstyles.

I’ve been obsessed with loose, messy waves lately. Think Alexa Chung-style perfectly messy hair. A little bit French, a little bit festival-chic.

These beachy waves are also perfect if you have straight hair. You can create movement and texture in your hair. Even if you’re planning to braid your hair or put it up in a bun, these loose waves will help hold your style in place.

Quick beachy waves hairstyle tutorial with the ghd eclipse

You’ll need:

• ghd eclipse styler
• hair clip

Step-by-step

1. Prep your hair with a heat protectant like ghd Heat Protect Spray.
2. Section your hair and clip up the top. Work from the underneath layers first.
3. Create your beachy waves by turning the ghd as you move down your hair. First you want to turn your ghd away from your head, then turn it 180 degrees back to your head. Continue moving down each section of your hair turning your ghd back and forth to create waves.
4. Continue styling your hair in small sections. Hold the ghd eclipse firmly on each section as you turn it back and forth down your hair. The cool to touch casing makes this way more comfortable with the ghd eclipse than other stylers.
5. Unclip a layer of hair around so you can keep waving your hair in small sections.
6. Continue until all your hair has been waved. This style is really quick and even thick hair shouldn’t take more than 10-15 minutes to do. The tri-zone technology, unique to eclipse, ensures the styler remains a constant temperature of 185 degrees – the ghd proven optimum styling temperature.
7. If you have a fringe or bangs, angle the styler away from your face to curl any shorter layers.
8. Finish with a serum to smooth the ends of your hair, or try sea salt spray to add more volume in fine hair.

• Keep a fluid, even motion as you move the ghd down your hair.

Super easy beachy waves hairstyle tutorial with the ghd eclipse

You’ll need:

• ghd eclipse styler
• hair elastics

Step-by-step

1. Brush your hair to remove any knots and spritz your hair with a heat protectant like ghd Heat Protect Spray.
2. Separate the bottom section of your hair. Clip the top section of your hair up and out of the way for now.
3. Split the bottom section in half and braid each side. Just do a basic three strand plait (braid) and secure the ends of your braids with hair elastics.
4. Unclip the top section and braid in small sections. Depending on how large or small you want your waves to be, you can choose how many braids to do. I did five braids in my hair for loose and messy waves.
5. Heat up your braids. Use your ghd eclipse to press down on your braids and set the waves in place. This is easy with the ghd eclipse as the cool to touch casing won’t burn your fingers.
6. Let your hair cool while you finish getting ready. Then take out your braids to reveal your loose, messy waves.

Styling tips

• Do more or less braids depending on how wavy you want your hair to be.
• Make sure you let your braids cool before taking them out. Your waves will last longer if you let them cool in the braid shape.
