Do you hate brushing hair out of your face all day long?
Try these two easy ways to pin back your hair for fuss-free down styles.
I love wearing my hair out but I’m forever tucking my hair behind my ears to keep it out of my eyes.
Tucking my hair behind my ear is such a habit that I do it even when my hair it back. It’s like when you go to push up your glasses and realise you’re wearing contact lenses. I had laser eye surgery and I till kept pushing my glasses up for years!
But back to hair habits, constantly touching your hair is not a good idea. Dirt from your hands transfers to your hair making your hair look oily and dirty very quickly. With this simple side pin back, you can keep your hair out of your eyes while still keeping your hair loose.
The second hairstyle builds on the side pin back, with a secret tie at the back. This hidden hair band keeps your hair back off your face, and stays in place more securely than bobbly pins alone.
The side pin back hairstyle tutorial
Step-by-step
- Part your hair in the middle, or off to the side. Comb through to smooth it down at the front.
- Take a 1-inch section of hair next to your part. Pull this section back but make sure to separate it from the hair at the side of your face. You want to leave the sides down.
- Pin your hair back. Use a strong bobby pin and place it horizontally or at a slight angle with the open end pointing up to hold your hair back.
- Cover the pin with your hair. Bring your hair over the pin from the back to cover it and make sure the hair at the side of your face is not caught in the pin.
- Repeat on the other side and you’re done!
Style tips
- This side pin back is perfect if you’re growing out your fringe/bangs. They’ll blend into your hair and give the impression of long layers.
- You can cross a second bobby pin over into an X-shape if you find your hair isn’t staying in place with one pin.
The secret pin back hairstyle tutorial
Step-by-step
- Start by pinning back your fringe/bangs as in the previous tutorial, or leave them loose.
- Take a small section of hair at your hairline above your ear. Take equal sections on either side or your head.
- Tie the sections together with a hair elastic. Make sure they are tied really tightly at the back of your head.
- Using your index fingers, separate a section of hair at the back of your head and pull it out and over your hair elastic. Hold the tied section in place as you pull your hair with the other hand.
- Tighten the hair elastic again and arrange the top section of your hair over the top, making sure that you can’t see the band underneath.
Style tips
- Use a small hair elastic as this will be easier to hide in your hair. Choose a clear elastic or one that matches your hair colour.
- You could also pin the top section of your hair up and out of the way before tying your hair back. I only thought of this after shooting the tutorial and it does seem an easier way to so this hairstyle.
Tell me, what’s your favourite trick for keeping your hair out of your face when you wear it out? Do you love headbands or hair pins, or do you let your hair go wild?

seems soooo simple, and the effect is fantastic!
Loved your tutorial!!
I have a request too. I have thin hair at my crown, and I want to know if there’s any way to style it and make it look puffy or voluminous, without using any products/hairspray or tricks like teasing. I don’t want to cause any damage to my hair since it is already thinning, that’s why I’m searching for alternate safe ways.
Thx for reading!

Thanks so much Pri! I think products and teasing are the best way to get extra volume at the crown but if you want to avoid these then play around with parting your hair in different directions to cover the crown area better. You’ll find that if you let your hair dry in one direction and then flip it back over you’ll have more volume naturally at the roots. Hope this helps x

I read your post, and was thinking… I sometimes do my part in a “zigzag”. I was thinking that it could help you in your crown area. Like she suggested, parting it different ways. And it’s super easy! Just take the sharp end of a comb, start in the front, and make Z towards the back (the more zigzag, the more volume you should create). Help it fall into place & mist on some finishing spray, if desired. You could also try a diagonal part. That is my normal go to. Same thing, just start the part of center. Sometimes I will part the front of my hair to the side, and the back in the middle. Just play aground with it. Good Luck!

Guilty as charged! In fact, I’ve tucked my hair behind my ears as I type this. Love these 2 beautiful but simple (meaning I can do them!) hairstyles. Thanks for this, Chrissy. x

Thanks Sonia! And thanks for sharing it too xx

Man, you don’t know how much I needed this tutorial! I tired using a bobby pin, and it always slips out. This is a sure fire way to make this style work.
Hair Romance says
Thanks Emily! Hope you give it a try this week 🙂

You have such beautiful hair. I love the way it falls, so much body. I will use your 10 foods to faster hair growth. I’m sure that is helpful. My hair is just below chin length and straight, in a bob. I get tiered of wearing it that way. How do I get the same subtle wave it in the way you do?
Hair Romance says
Thanks Emily! In this photo I blowdried my hair with a round brush, stretching it up and round to create the waves and volume. You could get a similar look with a large curling wand too x

I tried the second one yesterday and it was very nearly life-changing. I am not sure I’ll ever wear my hair down again without doing it! Thank you!

Alright, I think I can manage either one of these, yay! I also just learned to put the ripple side of the bobby pin next to the scalp for a super better hold….don’t judge me!
Hair Romance says
That’s great Karen, these are definitely do-able no matter what your skill level 🙂 and no judgement here ever!

I almost never have my hair all out. I think I seriously need a hair cut. I often use bobby pins to hold a little hair back. I like these new ideas. I am also into using a bobby pins with a little pretty stone or something on it.
Hair Romance says
Thanks Trudi, I’m also a fan of pretty clips and hair accessories. They always seem to make it look like you went to a lot of effort (but really just took 2 seconds to do your hair!) x
