11 ways to use hair oils for extraordinary hair

July 23, 2015 By Hair Romance 10 Comments

Often it’s the little things that can make a big difference with your hair. Like a few drops of hair oil that can be used in 11 different ways to give you extraordinary hair every day.

Brought to you by L’Oréal Paris Elvive

Hair Romance - 11 ways to use hair oils 1

I love a multitasking hair product. Hair oils are so versatile and my hair loves them.

If your hair is fine, you may have avoided hair oils in the past, thinking they make your hair oily, but there’s no reason to fear them. The new formulations are light and quickly absorbed into your hair, leaving it feeling beautiful and not weighed down or greasy. Here’s more on whether hair oil makes your hair oily.

I’ve been testing the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Extraordinary Oils range and I’m impressed. I’ll have a full review of the range next week but first I’ve been putting the oils through their paces.

Hair oil is not a single-use product. Here are 11 ways to use hair oils for extraordinary hair every day.

11 ways to use hair oils for extraordinary hair

1. As a weekly treatment

Show your hair some extra love by doing an oil treatment. Apply hair oil from root to tip and wrap your hair in a towel. You get bonus points for heating up your towel with hot water and then squeezing it out to create a mini sauna for your hair. Leave the oil treatment on for 30 minutes and then rinse out with cool water.

2. Before colouring your hair

The night before your hair appointment, or your at-home colour session, apply 1 pump of oil to your hair. The oil will help protect your scalp and nourish your hair so that it comes through the colour process looking good.

3. Before shampooing

10 minutes before hopping in the shower to wash your hair, apply 1 pump of oil to the lengths and ends of hair to smooth your hair. It’ll help to detangle it as well.

4. Apply to wet hair before drying

After you hop out of the shower, use 1 pump of hair oil to make styling easier. Apply the oil in two steps; first along the length of the hair and then on the ends. You can also comb it through and let your hair air dry or use a hairdryer.

5. On dry hair before blowdrying

When heat styling dry hair, you need to take care to avoid stress and damage. Comb a few drops of hair oil through your hair to smooth and detangle, and create a foundation for the next style.

6. Fight frizz

Smooth your hair before frizz even has a chance to form. After shampooing, apply 1 pump of oil to your hair while it’s still damp. Use a wide tooth comb to detangle your hair. Remember to start combing the ends first, then move up your hair.

7. Make your hair shine

Hair oils add shine and softness to dry and dull hair. Work a few drops into your hair and comb through. I particularly love using the Extraordinary Oil Light Mist as a finishing spray in my hair, it’s especially good for fine or thin hair.

8. Define your curls

Get great curls without the crunch by using hair oil. After shampooing (and conditioning) apply hair oil to your hair and gently work the product into your hair. Scrunch lightly to encourage your curls to form. Let your hair air dry, or use a diffuser to dry your hair. You can also add a few drops of hair oil to dry curls for more definition.

9. Protect your hair from the sun

Just like your skin, your hair needs to have extra care to avoid sun damage. Apply a few drops of oil to your hair and braid it into a protective style so you can have fun in the sun.

10. Protect your hair while you’re in the pool

Chlorine can dry your hair and even cause your hair to change colour. Grab a swimming cap and apply hair 1 pump of oil to your hair before you swim. You’ll come out of the pool with even better hair than you started your swim with.

11. Hair check-up

If you’ve been neglecting your hair, or spending time at the beach, then it’s time to give your hair a check-up. Apply a few drops of hair oil to the ends of your hair and massage it in. Leave it to penetrate your hair, and then rinse the rest out with cool water.

Did you know that one hair product could have so many uses? How many ways have you tried? Or do you have another way that you like to use hair oils?

I’m obsessed with Aveda’s Dry Remedy oil. It smells amazing. Mostly I use it the day(s) after I wash and style – dry shampoo on the roots, oil on the ends! 🙂

I love hair oil, use Avedas during the day, and as a special treat I put lavender oil on at bedtime – conditions my hair and scalp and the smell gives me a lovely restful sleep!

4 and 6 are the main ways I use mine and i have been finding it defines waves well on dry hair too, probably because it cuts the frizz and just leaves the wave. A more suprising way i have been using it though is half and half with a thick moulding wax or pomade (stolen out of the husbands draw). The oil makes it a lot thinner and more useable and then i pat it through my waves for definition and to make curling iron waves look more piecey and undone. Best thing ever withouy having to buy another product!

Oh you have to try these Sophie! If you love the range then these you will adore the oils. They last so well too as you only use a pump each time 🙂

We LOVE using oils in our hair! Sometimes we’ll just put coconut oil in our hair the night before we wash it 🙂 But this looks divine!
