How to fake a long ponytail without hair extensions – the double pony trick

November 12, 2013 By Hair Romance 19 Comments

Hair Romance - how to fake a long ponytail

I’ve seen a few pics around on Pinterest about a trick to make your ponytail look longer but I was still a bit sceptical. Does it really work?

So on Sunday afternoon I tested it out and yes, yes it does work!

There’s a secret second ponytail right at the nape of your neck to give the illusion of long hair even when wearing your hair up in a high ponytail.

In the after pic I’m even wearing my ponytail a little higher, which should mean an even shorter ponytail but instead my hair looks much longer. This trick works in straight, wavy and curly hair too.

Step-by-step

The secret to making this look like one ponytail when it’s really two ponytails is how you section your hair. You can just section your hair at ear level and do a high ponytail and low ponytail but you’ll see your hair going down to the low ponytail. If you have dark hair this may not be as obvious but it my hair it was really noticeable.

  1. You want to take an upside-down U shape section from either side of your neck up to your top ponytail. You only need to leave enough hair at the side to cover the lower section, and that way you’ll be able to create ponytails of almost equal size. The top ponytail will still be a little bigger.
  2. Clip the top section up and gather the lower section into a ponytail at the nape of your neck. The lower the ponytail, the longer your hair will look.
  3. Unclip the top section and gather the rest of your hair into a ponytail at the crown of your head or at the back of your head. Use clear hair elastics or a colour to match your hair.

The double pony styling trick

So as not to expose the secret double ponytail underneath, I like to pin a small piece of hair loosely at the sides of the second ponytail. Not that it matters if anyone sees it, but I like to keep the illusion that it’s all one long ponytail.

Hi Lil, try making the ponytails a bit closer together. You can also pin some hair from the top ponytail to the second ponytail elastic so that is helps to combine them x
