Big Hair Friday – Working Girl

September 29, 2011 By Hair Romance 10 Comments

Have you seen the movie “Working Girl”?

It has some of the biggest hair you will ever see. It’s even extreme for the 1980s. It came on TV a little while ago and I forgot how funny it was. It has a great message about the underdog succeeding and some fabulous lines such as –

“I am not steak. You can’t just order me.”

and

“If you want to be taken seriously, you need serious hair.”

Which brings me to my discussion question for today, do you need a serious haircut to be taken seriously?

Yesterday I posted about colour block hair that you can wash out as I would assume it wouldn’t be appreciated at a conservative 9-5 job. I know appearance is important but does your haircut reflect your intelligence and therefore how seriously people treat you?

I dyed my hair pink (many years ago) when I was a student but working in an extremely conservative actuarial office. I know many of my colleagues treated me differently and were unsure of how to treat me with my “crazy” hair.

Love to know your thoughts and hear your experiences about how you have been treated because of your hair or your appearance. Do you need a serious haircut to be taken seriously? And what do you think of Joan Cusack’s makeup?

@Anonymous – that haircut sounds fabulous! It's like serious at the front, party at the back!

I teach at a fairly conservative private school. At age 36 I had a peek-a-boo cut in the back with bright fuchsia hair peeking out. I LOVED IT! Funny thing was that so many people thought they were just extensions. I got a few side eye looks from a few parents but most loved it — I'd love to do it again!

I love your blog. I just found it after you left a comment on my blog. I have seen your pictures around Pinterest, but I didn't look to see where the source was. You have a great eye for hair and I am so excited to follow such a fun blog. I also did the 30 day challenge (after you did) and I had so much fun. My clients loved seeing all of my different looks. I will have to point them to your blog so they can have more inspiration!

    Take care,
    Mallory

GOD I love that movie and the hair and the makeup! So freaking great! And I used to have pink hair too, and I have visible tattoos and piercings, and sometimes, depending on the person, they treat me like I'm some punk kid. At least most people nowadays are more open-minded, but I still have to cover my tattoos at work, and I work at a makeup store. Wth?!

Oh Kimberly you are fabulous, please do big hair again!

I totally agree, the bigger my hair, the smaller my hips look! It's all about proportion.

I so had big hair in the '80s…LOL! And I have sleek hair today. But, I'd love for big hair to make a comeback. If people are looking at this huge hair, they can't be looking at the huge butt. ;P
