Continuing on my Game of Thrones hairstyle tutorial series is this rope twist braid inspired by Cersei Lannister.
Cersei is one of those characters you have a love/hate relationship with, don’t you think? She’s so complex and I think she’s be a lot of fun, as long as you stayed on her good side. You don’t want to get on her bad side for sure.
The actor who plays Cersei Lannister, Lena Headey, is pretty fun in real life. I recommend following her on Twitter and Instagram for some fun behind the scenes photos like this.
For this Game of Thrones hairstyle tutorial, I have the lovely and talented Meredith of Young the Label and her gorgeous hair.
I’ve created a simplified version of Cersei’s hairstyle that is easier to do in your own hair. Instead of the six-strand braid featured above, I’ve style four rope twist braids into a three-strand braid.
Game of Thrones Hairstyles – Cersei Lannister rope braid hairstyle tutorial
Step-by-step
- Part your hair in the centre, or to the side. Cersei always wears a centre part but if you prefer a side part then do what suits you.
- Take a one inch section of hair at your left temple and split it into two.
- Twist this section into a rope braid. To create a rope braid you twist the sections to the left and wrap them over each other to the right. You can see a clearer photo on my rope twist braid tutorial here.
- Secure the end of the braid with a small clear hair elastic.
- Repeat, creating a second rope twist underneath the first braid. Make this second braid larger than the first and secure the end with a small clear hair elastic.
- Repeat on the right side, creating a small rope twist braid at your temple and a larger rope twist braid above your ear.
- Twist the two small braids together at the back of your head. Secure them together with an elastic to create a single twist.
- Then braid all three rope twists together in a regular three-strand braid. Secure them all together with a small elastic. You can wrap some hair around to disguise the elastic if you like.
Game of Thrones Hairstyle Tips
- This style works in straight, wavy or curly hair.
- To re-create Cersei’s waves, use a large barrel curling iron held vertically to curl your hair. Then once your hair is cool, brush it out into soft waves.
- For a no-heat version of these curls, braid slightly damp hair into two braids and let your hair dry. Then take your braids out and run your fingers through to break up the waves.
- If trying the no-heat curls, make sure you stretch your braids out to ensure you get larger waves. Tight braids will give you a tighter wave/crimped look when you take them out.

Who has your favourite hair on Game of Thrones?
Nah, no love-hate relationship with her for me. Just hate. Lol.
LOVE her hair though! Game of Thrones showcases some of the best braids, ever. They should hire you to do the actors’ hair! Love this version you taught us here. I’m definitely trying this before cutting my hair in the fall.
She is kind of evil, but really she’s just a mother who loves her son, right? 😉 Love Game of Thrones and I think I could do new braids every week from the show!
I love that! I will have to give it a try. 🙂
Ooh this would look beautiful in your hair Stacy! Though I say that about every style as your hair is awesome 🙂
I absolutely love these hairstyles but alas, growing my hair out is no easy feat at the moment. Would you create more tutorials that can be adapted to neck-length hair?
Hi Tessa, will definitely work on some variations 🙂 Most of the Game of Thrones style are for very long hair (or extensions!)
