Hair powder is a special product I discovered years ago and are still one of my favourite products today. I consider them a bit of a miracle hair product because the volume they create is like magic.
If you have been reading Hair Romance for a while, you know I love hair powders. I’m getting a lot of questions about them so I thought I’d run through some of my favourites and the best way to use hair powders.
My top five hair volumising hair powders
1. Schwarzkopf volume powder
This is the original hair styling powder I first discovered and still my favourite today. It’s cheap, it works and it lasts – it’s a triple threat.
I’ve heard from a couple of readers that you don’t like this powder because it can be a bit stiff, but I think you might be using a little bit too much. Just did a sprinkle it on like salt and then you’ll get perfect volume.

2. Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion
I’ve been using Aveda Hair Potion for long time as well. If you find the Schwarzkopf product too stiff, then this is the hair powder for you.
This powder has a much lighter formula, so on one hand I don’t think it gives the same volume as the Schwarzkopf but it allows you to layer it, which means you can wear it for longer.

3. Shu Uemura Volume Maker
With lots of hair powders coming on to the market, the packaging became exciting. The Shu Uemura Volume Maker comes complete with its own brush delivery system.
This hands free packaging makes it really easy for touch ups on the go and it’s the ideal volume powder to keep in your purse.

4. Bhave Gunpowder
This Australian salon brand is really unique and I love the packaging of Bhave Gunpowder. It fires the perfect dose of hair powder right into the roots where you need it.
It also fires a light enough spray that you can easily apply hair powder on the ends of your hair to create texture and body.

5. David Mallett volume powder
If you love your hair products luxe, you can’t go past the David Mallett Volume Powder.
This minimalist packaging has a unique pump delivery system for the volume powder and releases the lightest mist of super fine powder. I really like using this after curling my hair to create perfectly undone waves.

Three ways to use hair powder

When using volume powder I like to compare it to salt.
So imagine when you’re salting your food, a little can go a long way. And it can be hard to take it back when you’ve added too much salt.
So always remember to apply hair powder with a light hand because you can always add more powder but it’s hard to remove if you’ve used too much.
1. Add instant volume to the roots
For an instant lift and to makes your hair look thicker in seconds, sprinkle the product directly on to the root and scalp. Concentrate on either side of the part line and at the crown of your head, or wherever you want volume.
Then using your fingertips, work the product in to get incredible instant volume and that perfect messy hair.
If you want to take your hair sky high, you can backcomb at the roots where you applied powder for mega volume. The higher the hair, the closer to heaven.
2. Perfectly undone waves
To get effortless looking hair can sometimes take a lot of work.
When you’ve curled your hair and it looks a little too perfect, volume powder on the midlengths and ends of your hair is your secret styling weapon.
Sprinkle or spray the powder over your curls, then shake it out. It add in that perfect amount of texture and hold. It won’t weigh your curls down and gives a much more romantic feel to your style.
It’s also great if you’re styling updos because it gives your hair that extra hold.
3. Use volume powder to get Pinterest perfect braids
Ever looked at Pinterest and seen those super think braids and thought “I could never do that!”
Here’s how you do it:
Sprinkle a little volume powder down the centre of your braid, pat it in and then start stretching out your braid.
Even if you have super fine hair you’ll be amazed at how much thicker your hair looks by adding in some volume powder.
This technique also works really well if you have shiny, smooth hair that always slips out of styles. Also if you have any layers, sprinkle a little powder onto the layers and tuck them back into the braid. You won’t even know they’re there.
The best thing about volume powder
Now you can see why I love volume powder and how versatile it is when creating hairstyles.
But my favourite thing about it is that you can reactivate it later on in the day without applying any more product.
As gravity and the weather take effect, you can restart the powder just by massaging it slightly with your fingertips and you have that instant root lift again.
Volume powder is the magic product that keeps on keeping on.
Have you tried volume powder before? Which one is your favourite and how do you like to use it?
