Want to tame your messy beach hair? Try this Dutch braided updo.

This is a great style to keep your messy beach hair up and off your neck on hot days. Of course it will also work in straight hair too, and you can wear it in winter too 😉
You’ll need a small, clear hair elastic and a few bobby pins to do this Dutch braid hairstyle.

Step-by-step
This Dutch braid hairstyle runs diagonally across the back of your head from your left temple to the right side of your neck.
- Starting near your left temple, take a 2 inch section of hair and split into three.
- Begin your Dutch braid. This is the same as a French braid just in reverse. Instead of crossing the sections over, you cross the sections under.
- After crossing the left section under the middle, and the right under the left, start to add in more hair to combine into the braid.
- Continue braiding in a diagonal line across the back of your head. Take large sections from across your head to minimise part lines.
- Once all your hair has been added to the braid, finish in a regular braid. Secure the end of your braid with a small clear hair elastic.
- S-T-R-E-T-C-H out your braid! This is the most important step. It emphasises the shape of your Dutch braid and makes your hair look thicker.
- Twist the end of your braid up and around to form the bun. Tuck the ends of your hair in and arrange your hair in a flat, flower shaped bun. Pin in place with bobby pins.

You are The Braiding Ninja! What is this extra step with your fingers when French and Dutch Braiding? I watch your videos over and over and can’t quite catch it. Instead of adding hair to the left or right piece when it’s on the left or right, you cross it into the middle and then add the hair? Is that what’s going on? Your braids are so lovely and I am going to keep practicing!
Thanks so much Cassandra! There’s a couple of ways to add in hair. One is to combine it with the existing section then cross it into the braid. Or you can cross the existing section into the braid, then pick up the piece to add in and cross it into the braid. It’s a personal preference but I like to do the latter as it helps me to keep the braid tight. So as I’m braiding, I’ll cross the section in then go back and pick up hair to cross in with that section. I think it is easier for me as it’s hard to add in curls without tangles. Love this hairstyle!! My oldest is 9 & she has really long hair, she currently has “new hairs” that are growing in that looks like bangs. She doesn’t really like bangs so on her when I do this hairstyle I part a little of the front (including the “new hairs” as she calls them) and put a small braid in the front too, I then connect both braids, then braid the ponytail, and create a bun. Perfect for someone who is trying to hide or just get their bangs off their face. My sister is 19 & every time I see her in the summer, this is the style she asks for. 🙂 Love this, it’s beautiful!!!
