How to DIY hair colour at home (+ GIVEAWAY!)

Hair Romance - How to DIY home hair colour - cotton candy hair

I’m pretty committed to my hairdresser and have shied away from DIY hair colour at home.

I was scared of colouring my own hair.

But I tried it.

And I’d do it again.

Here’s why.

Pink hair is so fun! I adore this cotton candy pink hair and it cost less than $6 to DIY. Schwarzkopf LIVE colour comes in the coolest shades. You might remember when I made DIY pink hair extensions but these new pastel shades are perfect for dip dye looks.

I want you to go and check out the video I made with Schwarzkopf to show you how I dyed my hair.

Here’s a run down of the steps but the video is more entertaining. I’m pretty awkward talking to camera, so please try to look past that.

Hair Romance - How to DIY home hair colour

To start, you need to consider your base hair colour. Pastels will show up best on pale hair. My hair has already been lightened so do this first before applying the semi-permanent LIVE Colour Pastels.

Step 1: Colour Prep

Make sure you read all the instructions first, put on gloves and cover your clothes. Also do an allergy test 48 hours before just to be safe. Shampoo your hair and dry it with a towel.

Step 2: Section your hair

To get an even colour effect, section your hair into 3 parts. I created a top ponytail and two lower ponytails as I have layers in my hair. You don’t want a dead straight colour line, so this is key. I backcombed my ponytails to help minimise any obvious colour lines too.

Step 3: Apply the colour

Squeeze the sachet into your hands (wearing gloves of course) and apply the colour to the ends of your hair.

Step 4: Wait for the colour to develop

This is pretty quick with the LIVE Colour range. For pale pastels you only need to leave it for 2 minutes. For deeper colour leave it on for 15 minutes. Check a section every couple of minutes to see how it is developing. The final colour depends on the base colour of your hair and how long you leave the colour on your hair to develop.

Step 5: Wash and style

Once the colour has finished processing, jump back in the shower and rinse out the colour really well. You can lightly shampoo and condition your hair. Then style away!

How I styled my curls

For these awesome curls, I used a leave in conditioner spray and Schwarzkopf curl cream. I diffused my hair and I did cheat a little by using a small curling wand to create more defined curls on the top layer of my hair.

All in all, the process of DIY hair colour was actually really straightforward and I would totally do it again. It’s ammonia free and semi-permanent, so it washes out. It lasts up to eight shampoos and I’ve got a pastel blue LIVE Colour I borrowed from the shoot that I can’t wait to try…

Cotton Candy looks amazing! Does it work if you try to dye your hair while its black without bleaching??

Hi Saumyaa, it works best on lighter hair and won’t show that well on dark hair. You would need to lighten your hair first to really see the pink x

I have always wanted to do something like this but I have always been too scared I’ll end up looking like Krusty the clown! I love how its semi permanent too!
