“Help! I’ve just cut my hair really short and now I don’t know how to style it!”
I’ve had a couple of tweets and emails from you asking the same question:
Do you need to use different hair styling products in short hair?
My answer is that it depends what you want to do with it!
You can still use the same mousse and hairspray in short hair that you use in long hair, but here are some fun products that will create new looks in your short hair.
You want: Sexy bedhead hair, with a bit of volume
Try: Styling powder
These styling powders are amazing for fine hair, and really give your hair some volume at the root. Hair Romance loves Taft Styling Powder, Osis Dust It and Aveda Pure Abundance.
How to style:
Styling powders have an unusual powder-to-liquid texture, sprinkle a little on your hair, about 2cm away from the root and work in with your finger tips. You can also put product on your fingers then apply to your hair.
They give a matte finish and loads of volume and soft texture.
You want: Sleek, wet look hair
Try: Gels and shine sprays
Go for a deep side part and add some hold and shine with these slick products. Hair Romance loves Redken Shine Flash 02, Osis Gelflex and Oribe Rock Hard Gel.
How to style:
Apply gel to damp or dry hair. Use a tail comb to create a very neat, deep side part and comb hair into a sleek style. I like to smooth over the hair with my hands to minimise the comb marks.
Apply shine sprays to finished looks for extra gloss and sparkle.
You want: Matte, textured style and hold
Try: Styling pastes
Pull some shapes with these styling pastes. You can mould any style with these pastes and it will stay there all day. Hair Romance loves Redken Rough CLay 20, KMS California Hairplay Clay Creme and Goldwell Mellogoo.
How to style:
Apply styling pastes to damp or dry hair. It’s best to rub the product between your hands first so you can evenly apply it to your hair. Remember you can always layer this product and add more later so start with a small amount.
These pastes have a matte finish so you can create textured styles that will stay in place all day and night, the shape is up to your imagination!

Osis Dust It is outstanding and works all day without reapplication. Just be careful using it, the holes are very big and it tends to come out fast! Great for volume and texture in bobs.

I used it when I had short hair, and still use it now I’m growing my hair long again. (it’s great as a dry-shampoo alternative, too)
Styling powders are sooo good, you can use them on almost any length hair
I absolutely love Aveda’s Hair Potion. It works well with long hair as well! A little tip I’ve learn though: Don’t shake it while it’s in the bottle, otherwise it will all just disappear!

Until recently I’ve always had various short hair styles and I’ve always loved Garnier Fructis beach hair. It’s a styling paste with a flexible hold that smells amazing and is really affordable. It’s great for really short hair or giving texture to bobs, etc.
