If you were wavering as to whether wet look hair was a wearable trend then here is the proof. Behold Rachael Taylor.
My jaw dropped when I saw Rachael Taylor at the AACTA awards in Sydney on Tuesday night. She was interviewed on the news and I couldn’t believe how well she was wearing wet, shiny hair. I love her amazing custom Dion Lee dress. Credit where credit’s due – Rachael was styled by Trevor Stones, with make-up by Sarah Tammer and hair by Sophie Roberts.
I will have to add my caveat that this look is not for everyone, but what fun look suits everyone?
I think the trick to making this wet look hair work is to be deliberate, and to make the rest of your look clean and modern. Minimalism is key.
How to achieve wet look hair
Everyone has their own method but here are some tips from top stylists:
- Oribe uses Rock Hard Gel or Original Pomade to achieve sleek, wet-looking locks and says Gel Serum on dry hair will also do the trick.
- Guido Palau recommends Redken Shine Flash 02 and Argan-6 oil for wet look hair he created for the S/S12 runways.
- Smitten Hair loves Kevin Murphy Hair Resort finished with Session Spray for a slicked look.

I agree! Rachael looked stunning! I think it really took her look up a notch and it really did complement her. I wouldn’t be surprised if her career sky rockets off the back of this look alone… she looked world class.

On TV she looked incredible and I don’t think the photos even do her justice. It was a fashion moment.

I think it looks amazing on the right person, but good execution and excellent bone structure are required to make it work (I have neither lol).
Loved Rachael Taylor’s hair, makeup, gown.

Didn’t she look amazing? I think because of the slightly sporty feel of her dress the hair was perfect.

Ok just purchased some hard rock gel. So Di I do this on wet hair then it just stays… Wet?
Will I need much product?

Woot! Rock Hard Gel is a cream based get so you can apply to wet or dry hair.
It all depends on how straight your hair dries naturally. In my hair I would blow dry it straight (and flat iron it too) then apply the gel and comb it into place to get this slick look.
If your hair is naturally straight, apply it to wet hair, comb, and it should stay in place.
Never overdo it with the product, 10 cent piece size will go a long way.

I think the wet look only works if you have hair as short as the model’s. And, if one is wearing an evening gown, then it looks like you ‘meant’ to wear it that way. Any other time and it’s questionable whether it was done on purpose or trying to be stylish. Hence, I don’t do wet. LOL
But I will always remember the look Princess Diana did with the wet look:

I’m not sure this look would work in my curls either, but done in a deliberate and minimalist way = hot.
What a video! Who’s the girl posing on the red carpet with her hands in the air? lol!
