Backstage at a fashion show is insane. In the hair and makeup tents, the stylists are working overtime to make sure each model matches the brief perfectly. That can be quite a feat when you have all different hair types to work into an identical hairstyle.
To make the magic happen each hairstylist has some fabulous tricks up their sleeves. Follow these expert styling tips for catwalk-worthy hair.
Nick Irwin for TIGI – Chris Benz and Mara Hoffman
“I used the dry shampoo and then blasted the hair with a hairdryer, so that the hair becomes a different fabric almost to play with. With Chris Benz’s show I even played around with wigs, using a full can of dry shampoo, pinning the hair into a deconstructed beehive shape, a little bit Bardot with a high crown and a slightly swept fringe, then setting it overnight”
Orlando Pita for Phyto – Derek Lam
Lots of teasing and Phyto Professional Workable Holding Spray gave hair incredible texture and hold minus any stickiness.
Luigi Morenu, Global Creative Consultant for John Frieda – Zac Posen
Inspired by Japanese architecture, Morenu said “my goal was to make the models look like what I envisioned a modern geisha to be, infused with the sleek simplicity of 1950’s Hollywood glamour.” On the models he used John Frieda® Luxurious Volume Extra Hold Hairspray to keep style in place, and finish with NEW John Frieda® Frizz-Ease® Glossing mist for extra shine. To achieve this at home try the John Frieda® Full Repair™ Touch Up Flyaway Tamer.
Eugene Souleiman, Global Creative Director, Wella Professionals – Narciso Rodriguez
“I wanted to create a hair look that was aerodynamic and gave the impression that the hair was moving at an incredibly high speed”, said Souleiman. Clean hair was prepped with Perfect Setting Lotionand blowdried away from the face. To emphasise the comb marks in the middle mohican section, Souleiman sprayed Wella Professionals Stay Styled hairspray closely on the hair to create lasting lines within the wave.
Antonio Corral Calero, Moroccanoil Artistic Director – Catherine Malandrino
Inspired by the 80s film “Cat People”, the strong feline inspired hair mixed textures and patterns to create a sophisticated graphic finish. After blowdrying the hair Corral Calero “applied new Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse, through the top and sides and massaged it into the strands until they were saturated. This helped to create a glossy base to hold the waved patterning to come”. To finish the look Corral Calero loves the new Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong “to hold it in place and leave it natural-looking and shiny”.
Guido Palau for Redken – Mark Jacobs
“It’s all about the hats,” said hairstylist Guido Palau, “the hair is the supporting structure; but even though you can’t see it, you know it’s a finished style,” Under the hats, Guido created two braids, twisted them into buns, and finished with a spritz of Redken Forceful 23 Hairspray.
Peter Gray for Moroccanoil – Badgley Mischka
Inspired by the German film “Metropolis”, Gray created gorgeous curls that were angular and soft at the same time. The irregular texture was created througha series of small buns and curling with a variety of different sized curling wands. “I used only one product to create every part of this look and to keep it in place; new Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong. Though highly textured and matte, the hair itself had to stay healthy, flexible and in perfect condition. Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong leaves the hair weightless while reducing frizz, has amazing hold, and won’t build up”, said Gray.
Eugene Souleiman, Global Creative Director, Wella Professionals – DKNY
“This hair look is all about preparation” says Souleiman. Ensure your hair is clean and well conditioned before attempting a sleek, elegant style like this. Souleiman says to apply “Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier to wet hair, then spraying with Perfect Setting before blow drying with a round brush to get a rich, smooth finish to the hair”. The deep part is right on trend and that leather clip is a definite DIY project.

I wish I could get my hair to look that good when I tease it..but it usually turns out as a teased mess or it some how deflates. I’m a teasing failure haha
Hair Romance says
haha, maybe you just don’t tease it far enough. I’ve seen the backstage pics and they get it twice as big before they smooth the hair into these shapes.
