Knots in your hair aren’t usually what you want but this style might change your mind.

This style was inspired by a reader’s take on my knotted half up hairstyle tutorial. I loved her version and asked her if I could shoot a tutorial for this look.

This hairstyle could be mistaken for a braid, but it’s simply a series of knots. It’s super quick to do as well. Try this style today!

What you’ll need:

  • Small hair elastic
  • Bobby pins

Step-by-step:

  1. Brush your hair to remove any knots. Although we’re adding in knots, we don’t want any to begin with.
  2. Take a large section at the top and split it into two. Tie these together in a knot.
  3. Add in hair from either side to your original sections and tie into a knot below the first knot.
  4. Repeat down the back of your head until all your hair is combined in the knots.
  5. Secure the end with a small hair elastic.
  6. Roll up your ponytail and tuck it under. Pin in place with bobby pins.

Styling tips

  • If your hair is long – continue knotting your hair down your ponytail. Twist your hair up and around into a bun. Pin in place with bobby pins. You could also leave your ponytail out or take it diagonally into a side braid.
  • Stretch out your knots to emphasise the shape of your updo.
  • You may need a few extra bobby pins to pin the knots in place. It will depend on your hair and how much is slips out of place.
  • If you find your hair keeps slipping, spray it with dry shampoo or a texture spray to help it to stay in place.

Do you ever tie knots in your hair? Would you try this hairstyle and where would you wear it?

It is so cool to see people finally doing knots in their hair. I was doing this at least 7 years ago. I like to take my hair, split it in two, and tie that in knots until it gets too short, and tuck it in up and over on top, hiding the ends on the inside and pinning. 2 minute hair tops! 🙂 Also, taking pieces of hair, making tiny knots in them, and just pinning back like a half-up.

But how does it stay?? I saw this and instantly wore it the next day. My hair was a couple days post-wash, but the knots slid down a lot. It is hard to get them tight to begin with in my hair. And the hardest bit was getting my tail to stay tucked under. No matter how tightly I can pin it, the pins always loosen and come out. So.. longer pins, lots of texturing?

You can add some extra pins under each knot to hold them in place if you find your hair is slipping. My hair is a couple of days dirty which definitely helps. A bit of sea salt spray or texture spray can add that extra grip too. Hope this helps! xx
