I found this hair care advisory video on Youtube, it’s hilarious!
I love how they advise washing your hair frequently – once every two weeks! I’m about once a week, and I thought I was avoiding washing my hair.
I have heard that vinegar trick before, has anyone tried a vinegar rinse in their hair?
Take care of what nature has given you!
I can get a few days out of my hair between washes, I alternate between using a shampoo/conditioner combo and just a conditioner wash. It’s about bra strap length, and it’s fine but there is LOTS of it with lots of loose waves/curls. I use varying leave in conditioners, serums, oils, and cremes to add moisture to the ends and cut down on frizz. My newest favorite is a Brazil Nut “Define and No Frizz” curl creme from The Body Shop. Smells WONDERFUL, protects from heat, and does what it says it will..reduces frizz and helps define curls.
Thanks Brynne, I’ll have to try that Body Shop curl creme!
I wash my hair about once a week, but that is a relatively recent thing. If you can hold out without washing your hair, your natural oils will balance and you hair won’t be as greasy. Washing so much completely strips your hair, so it produces overtime. For a while I did the baking soda/ACV thing, but I don’t have hair that easily tangles, so I was able to get away with nothing.
I went with the “No Poo” movement when I had bangs, so it was a tough 2 weeks for me.
So true Erin, it’s hard to break the habit, but it’s worth it
I have not washed my hair in 4 weeks… i just scrub my scalp with SLS free conditioners every day. NO ONE has been able to tell. It only is slightly greasy to the touch in the shower when i do the 2-5 minute rinse. I dye my hair red so I wanted to see the vibrant color change with normal hair washing (every 2 or 3 days with shampoo) and this new method. First started with Wen but it is super expensive. Now i go to the health food store and buy Giovanni conditioners. I love it. I last had my hair washed when i go it colored 4 weeks ago. I can’t wait to see what my HD says. There is no build up and people are SHOCKED when i tell them. They don’t believe me…
I believe you, sounds fantastic! Would love to hear what your hairdresser says.
Good tips! Make the most of what nature gave you 🙂
Exactly x
I tried washing every other day and I got dandruff for the first time ever so in conclusion I wash everyday. I think hair maintenance really depends on the type of hair a person has. Like previous poster, I’d be a giant grease ball as well but I have some friends that can pull off every 2-3 days. I can’t imagine washing in a sink though. Talk about a pain in the butt.
I’d have a bad back doing my hair in the sink like that! No wonder short hair was popular, imagine washing really long hair like that?
Once every two weeks?! I’d be a giant grease ball all the time – no amount of hair spray or baby powder or dry shampoo could tame the grease!
Oh p.s. I put up hair photos and tweeted them at you lol. They’re not very good – yay for iPhone camera!
Thanks Jessica! Your hair looks great x
For me, saving money is currently #1 on my priority list, so maybe I’ll just try the vinegar.
Definitely sounds like a cost effective hair treatment, I’m going to try it too
I do well to go 2 days without washing my hair. I’m just too oily (thin hair, crazy hormones). They’re definitely right about bleaching being TERRIBLE for your hair. a year and a half ago I bleached my hair blonde 2 times in 2 days (wasn’t blonde enough the first time) and then a day later dyed it back to brown because I hated it. I’m so thankful for the ombre hair trend- my blonde grow out (because of course the brown dye washed out) is right on trend! 😉 If I could go back in time I would smack myself upside the head when I said “it’s just hair, it’ll grow out.”
Wow! That’s a huge amount of colour on your hair in only a few days. Glad it’s growing out well!
do you have any advice on hair washing frequency? I know you’re supposed to wash as little as possible, but I have quite oily hair and by the end of the second day it’s shiny/greasy and limp. I’ve tried a few drugstore dry shampoos and they don’t seem to help much and they irritate my scalp. any advice?
thanks.
Hi Nadia, it can take a while to work out what’s best for your hair. Like skincare, it’s very individual. For my hair which is curly and dry at the ends, I wash my hair about every 4 days, sometimes longer. Some people wash their hair everyday. Most of the time I recommend letting your hair go into a routine where you don’t wash it every day, but it’s individual. Try changing your regular shampoo. It sounds like you’re sensitive to some shampoos so try a sulphate free formula which should be less irritating for your scalp.
Hope this helps!
I get oily, crazy hair when I don’t wash it – my hair is fine, there is a lot of it, and it’s slightly wavy. I am still trying to learn how to work with it – as I used to just wear it very very short (like Emma Watson’s) after a childhood of ponytails, and have shoulder length hair at the moment for the first time in a decade!
What I am doing is washing every other day, alternating shampoos because my hair gets product build-up when I use moisturising products every day, but gets dried out at the ends easily as well! I use dry shampoo on the roots on my no-wash day and found a dry shampoo at boots for sensitive scalps. Putting talcum powder on my forehead and around the hairline before bed actually helps too – as my hair gets most oily where it’s close to my face. The night before I wash I put argan oil in overnight, lots in the ends – this seems to slow oil production after a few weeks.
Good luck!
Thanks for sharing Amiee. Great tips x
Ha. I love it! Make me want to go brush my hair out–cousin it style.
Lol! Cousin it with pincurls?
I have done the vinegar rinse quite a few times actually!
You’d be amazed, it makes it so shiny and the blond just pops! I used to keep a 2 to 1 water to apple cider vinegar mix in my shower and rinse with it as often as I could… the smell is annoying until it is dry, but when I did it, it was SO awesome.
Thanks for the recipe Holly, I might give this a go!
I’ve tried the vinegar rinse before. I saw definite improvement!
Thanks Afton, it’s more popular than I realised. I might have to give it a go
Silly people, I don’t want squeaky hair. My hd looked at me a bit strangely when I said I washed once a week (probably more like six days, but when straightened I eek it out for an extra day or two with dry shampoo). You have to wonder just how much oil production would slow if no products were used after shampooing, two weeks is almost long enough to get settled into the no ‘poo method. And I have tried vinegar rinses – left me smooth and shiny.
I agree JJ, it’s all about letting your hair settle into a good routine
I have been using the baking soda ACV method now for about 9 months, and I was my hair about once a week. I am in love with it, my hair looks wonderful, the bounce is back and so is the wave.
My friend does the same Lisa, and her hair looks fab too. Sounds so low maintenance (which I love!)
Well, that finally explains why “I’m washing my hair” was an event back then!
haha true! Thanks Dee x
